Conshohocken, PA : On Thursday, May 24, 2012, IKEA, The Life Improvement Store, will be giving away free IKEA blue bags at locations outside of IKEA US stores* to kick off the summer season and help people prepare for their upcoming Memorial Day weekend plans. The iconic blue bag is large, flexible, lightweight and easily cleaned, making it the ideal reusable companion to transport items for all summer activities - from trips to the beach, the pool or a neighborhood BBQ. The giveaway is part of the national IKEA Random Acts of Life Improvement campaign, aimed to surprise and delight the public with tokens of appreciation to improve everyday moments in their lives. IKEA plans to give away a total of 35,000 bags nationwide.

The iconic IKEA blue bags provide consumers with a reusable accessory that will be useful for carrying all types of items throughout the summer and beyond. IKEA phased out plastic bags for in-store shoppers in 2007 with a goal to increase sustainable practices.

“We know that consumers use our blue bags for many purposes beyond shopping at IKEA – whether packing for a last-minute weekend outing or a trip to the grocery store,” says Lisa Allen, Public Relations Specialist, IKEA US. “We think it’s a perfect small token to help kick-start the summer and to inspire sustainable choices that that improve people’s everyday lives.”

This is the third Random Act of Life Improvement being executed as a part of the IKEA Life Improvement Project, a program designed to help inspire and empower people to improve their lives, as well as the lives of others in their community. The first Random Act of Life Improvement took place on October 1, 2011, when IKEA partnered with American Forest to give away 38,000 tree seedlings across the country. For the second Random Act of Life Improvement, IKEA gave away more than 10,000 cups of free coffee across the U.S. to help local commuters wake up after losing an hour of sleep to daylight savings time on March 5, 2012.
