CIWEM YOUNG MEMBER COASTS HER WAY TO VICTORY

Dr. Rosalind Turner, a Senior Coastal Engineer at Mott MacDonald has won the Jacobs Engineering sponsored CIWEM Young Members Award 2012 for her deep commitment to environmental improvement and sustainability, demonstrated in her development of an innovative coastal management strategy.

Rosalind’s presentation on her involvement in designing an innovative beach management scheme in the form of timber and rock groynes that delivered cost effective, long term coastal management exceedingly impressed the judges during the interview session of the Jacobs Engineering sponsored CIWEM Young Members Award, 2012.

Described by her nominator as not just an ambassador for CIWEM within the Industry, but also one within the wider flood and coastal erosion community, Rosalind works closely alongside coastal communities promoting environmental awareness whilst trying to find sustainable solutions to coastal problems.

Notwithstanding her engineering role, Rosalind takes part in a number of Branch and Group activities including being an active member of CIWEM’s Rivers and Coastal Group (RCG).

Judge Justin Taberham, Director of Policy at CIWEM, said: “Rosalind showed that she is a worthy winner of the award; she is deeply committed to environmental improvement and sustainability and has a huge enthusiasm which was clearly indicated to the judges. CIWEM is very lucky to have her as a committed member”.

Judge Mark Etheridge of Jacobs Engineering remarked: “The Judges were very impressed not just with her presentation but the significant contribution she had given to CIWEM”.

On winning the award, Rosalind said: “I'm thrilled and honoured to have been chosen for this prestigious award by CIWEM and I am passionate about supporting their work. I believe that CIWEM's Groups and Branches give members a unique and unconstrained environment to share knowledge. They also break down barriers between the public and private sectors and between employers, sparking collaborations and ideas which can reinvigorate the Industry, driving forward truly sustainable development.”

Rosalind will be presented with her award and a cheque for £1,000 at CIWEM’s Annual Dinner on 17th May 2012 at Drapers Hall, London .
