As Paul Gilding pointed out we need about one and half Earth right now to sustain us, as we live now, and the demands are growing. This is not logical, this is not possible - infinite growth on a finite planet violates plain math. Will our solutions come from technological advances? Who is in charge of changing the tide around. A small community of Snohomish, WA considers everybody responsible. Snohomish is located in area of fertile agriculture, glorious surroundings, salmon filled rivers, it is a place where where people still talk to strangers and render help if needed.
Snohomish, WA, April 2012 : Ecological and energy problems are on the minds of many today. Human beings created a lot of “stuff” using up Earth resources without the ability to decompose it. As Paul Gilding pointed out we need about one and half Earth right now, to sustain us, as we live now, and the demands are growing. This is not logical, this is not possible - infinite growth on a finite planet violates plain math. We have only one planet. Will our solutions come from technological advances? Who is in charge of changing the tide around?
A small community of Snohomish, WA considers everybody responsible. Snohomish is located in area of fertile agriculture, glorious surroundings, salmon filled rivers, it is a place where where people still talk to strangers and render help if needed.
For the third year in a row, Snohomish is celebrating Earth Day with all day event on April 22nd, Sunday. It starts at 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. on Ave A and First St. Local groups will demonstrate their eco-friendly efforts, visitors will sign a Pledge of Sustainability, live music will be delivered by well known artists of Tim Noah’s Thumbnail Theater, Bone Poets Orchestra and an eco-activist Dana Lyons, who gained international fame with his song “Cows with Guns”. Once the sun gets lower, after 5 p.m. we move block west to a space of The Riverside Gallery at 1101 First St, lower level to watch movie “Carbon Nation” and party with zero-waste pot luck.
But one day is not quite enough – Earth Day celebration will actually start on April 15th with a game throughout Historic Downtown Snohomish. Visitors can browse Snohomish charming merchants, spot Earth Day Friend poster and ask for a stamp. 20 stamps, turned to the Visitor’s Center, might win $100 for shopping.
On Saturday April 21st, Earth Day Fest can be enjoyed at 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the 2804 Grand Ave, Everett. The Sno-Isle Natural Food Co-op will close the street in front and having a farmer's market style celebration with kids’ activities, food, music, groups and a free wine tasting 2-4 pm. There will be a fundraiser for the WSU Beach Watchers. Some of the vendors joining in are: Imagine Children’s Museum, People for Puget Sound, Snohomish Conservation District, Snohomish Bike Club, Cascade Harvest Coalition, Natural Clothing Company, Hibulb Cultural Center, Transition Port Gardner, Upper Ridge Cottages, Garden Treasures, Bee Haven, Teas by Tobi and more.
Up to the 70’s, we had leaded gas cars, polluted skies and no EPA to monitor that. We have come long way, it really is worth noticing that. Lots more to do but look at the number of ordinary people making a difference. Like two main organizers: Sno-Isle Natural Foods Co-op opened in 1997 and has been proudly community owned. It was built by volunteers, and the strong belief that there is a need for healthy, wholesome and local food in our community. They make an impact in education, training, philanthropy and supporting local producers. Natural Clothing Company promotes clothing made of hemp, organic cotton, and bamboo – fibers that are renewable and good for the soils. Many of the fibers are grown organically and all are made of plants not oil (as polyester is). These companies are not alone. Wolf Camp and Wolf College helps protect life of the planet in its original design. Songcroft Naturals holistic products nourish the skin with its herbs and plant formulas.
Bruning Pottery teaches utilizing respectfully Earth resources. Firefly Salon uses natural Aveda products and has organized a raffle to benefit Puget Soundkeeper Alliance. Anywhere but Here Travel helps their clients with eco-friendly travel and offset the energy usage. Grilla Bites Cafe feeds their customers with natural fresh produce, many organic, non-gluten or non-diary options.
There might be no drastic changes within our lifetime, but it is never too late or early to begin making efforts to preserve our planet for today and tomorrow. Locally supporting is more than just a gimmick and marketing scheme. It has profound effects in our carbon footprint, our communities and family producers (who happen to be our neighbors). The quote by Paul Cezanne “the day is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will set off a revolution” is quite true. Everybody on this planet is interconnected and together - everybody is stronger.
