The new Government will scrap the last Government's plans for the imposition of bin taxes on family homes, Cabinet Ministers Eric Pickles and Caroline Spelman have announced, and one can but add to that “good riddance”. This was one of the most stupid ideas of the previous government, as it would have just lead to an increase in fly tipping.

At the launch of the country's first ever council-run recycling reward scheme, Ministers dismissed 'pay as you throw' taxes because they would lead to more fly-tipping to dodge fines, saying people should be given incentives to recycle not punishments.

The voluntary reward scheme in Windsor and Maidenhead lets residents can earn points for recycling to spend at local shops, from a free cup of coffee or a discounted eye test, to deals on spa treatments and local restaurants.

Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, said: "Rather than helping the environment, bin taxes would have fuelled fly-tipping and backyard burning. The best way to encourage people to recycle is not to punish families, but to encourage and reward them for going green. It's time to rein in the bin bullies and work with local people to build greener and cleaner communities."

Caroline Spelman, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: "Windsor and Maidenhead Council have got it right by rewarding people for voluntarily doing the right thing not penalising them for doing the wrong thing - that is how we can change behaviour, improve the environment and get people to play their part in a Big Society.

"That is why we are here today supporting the first ever council-run scheme in the UK to give residents reward points or cash vouchers for recycling."

60,000 households in Windsor and Maidenhead can volunteer to claim up to £135 worth of points a year from over 100 reward partners, at no cost to other residents. The scheme will also mean that less recyclable waste will go to expensive landfill, saving the council money.

Households volunteer to activate a RecycleBank account. They then receive a new, blue wheelie recycling bin for their mixed waste. Residents will earn points for how much residents recycle, similar to airline miles for flying – rewarding households 5.5 points for each kilogram (kg) the household recycles.

Points can be redeemed for rewards like money off products and services from participating local and national reward partners including retailers and service providers, or donated to local schools. RecycleBank already has 116 UK reward partners, including Marks and Spencer, Coffee Republic and Cineworld.

While this is a start we should really take a much closer look other projects and ideas, especially in the United States. There were have the reverse vending machines – and also, by now, now in Germany, where drinks cans and bottles can be exchanged for vouchers which can be turned into cash in the participating places that have the machines. Much like the Coin Star machines in many supermarkets.

There are also the official recycling centers in the US, whether municipality run or private, that pay people in cash for the recyclables that they bring in and many a poor and homeless family in America is making a living from doing just that.

Why, I ask, does it always seem to take years of expensive study, lengthy trial operations here and there, before we ever get any of this implemented in Britain? The schemes work in other countries and all we need to do is have a look at them by sending someone over there and then do it.

Oh well... Jobs for the boys, as usual.

Dean of White House Press Corps forced to resign

Helen Thomas, Dean of the White House Press Corps has been forced to resign after comments that the Jews should “get the h*** out of Palestine.”

This shows, once again, that one is not permitted, anywhere bar certain places that the “West” deems terrorist states, to question anything that the illegal Zionist entity called “Israel” does.

Israel commits acts of piracy on the high seas and gets away with it with only a few comments from around the “free” world while any other state that would do that or people, as in the case of the Somali pirates, get immediately attacked and in more than just words.

The state of Israel was created by simple piracy itself; by dispossessing the People of Palestine, when Ashkenazi Jews from Europe simply moved in and took over, claiming that land as theirs by right. By what right?

And the UN acquiesced this act of occupation because the US had the controlling power then still in the United Nations and the strength of the Jewish lobby in America.

Britain, whose job it should have been, as the country holding the protection power for Palestine, to protect the Palestinians just cut and ran and let it happen, but not after, it has to be admitted, suffering serious casualties when Jewish terrorists blew up the King David Hotel.

So, by what right did the Zionists take over Palestine and called it Israel? They claim a G-d-given one for this and this is a load of bull dust, as most of those that went there were no more observant religious than my chickens.

It would appear that when it comes to Israel and the Jews there is one law for them and one for the rest of the world.

If the Jews have a right to their own country and are allowed to simply annex and occupy the land of someone else because of the fact that they suffered in the Holocaust then what about the Romani People, the Gypsy People?

The Rom are a People who have suffered the same fate as the Jews under the Nazis and lost, when it comes to percentage, more of their members by far than did the Jews. But the Jews not only are permitted to have a state and do what they like; nay, they are also still allowed to dominate the Holocaust issue with claiming it basically as entirely and uniquely a Jewish thing.

However, one is not allowed to say anything even when one's own People are insulted by comments from that other quarter of “the Jews were sent to the gas because of their race and religion but Gypsies were sent there because they were asocial”. Such are comment that are, in fact, made to members of the Romani People frequently when they visit Auschwitz and such other places, and made by members of the Jewish group.

The race laws were first enacted against the Romani People of Europe, especially to start with against the Sinti in Germany, and the small number of Roma that was then in that country.

For the Gypsy it was just a continuation of the anti-Gypsy policies of the Weimar Republic and the Kaiser Reich. Those policies were based basically on race alone. It was the foreign element of the Gypsy that the authorities objected to.

While, however, there seems to be a special dispensation towards the Jews, and the Zionist state, from the powers of the area formerly known as the “West”, others seem to have little or no rights, whether Gypsies or Palestinians.

The Gypsies in Palestine, under Israeli occupation, or in the state of Israel, the Dom, are, primarily, treated as fourth-class citizens, if they are even regarded as citizens.

Even the proper Hebraic Jews, those that have always been in Palestine, are treated on a lower rank as do the Ashkenazim, and Palestinians are third-class, if they happen to be citizens of Israel at all.

The behavior of the government of Israel towards the people of the country, including its own, is very similar to that of the Nazis, as can be seen now for the fact that the Arab-Israeli MK, Haneen Zuabi, is facing being removed from the Knesset in order for her to be able to be prosecuted by the state for the fact that she was aboard the aid flotilla that was attacked by the IDF.

The actions during the military operations in Gaza in 2009 where children were gunned down by Israeli tank crews as they came out of a building under the white flag of truce is no different than what the Nazis did.

But, if one is to believe Mark Regev (Friedman), the spokesman for the Zionist government, then it was all defensive actions by Israel. Oh dear!

Regardless of all this it would appear to be illegal to make mention of such facts and to call for a free Palestine when one sits in Washington or London, I guess.

Urban Homesteading

There is a misconception of homesteading, the one that says: finding a piece o land in a rural setting to live a life of self-reliance. While this is the way homesteading has been interpreted over the decades and even centuries homesteading will become irrelevant if that conception is not reexamined.

If we want to see a sustainable life coming to the world all over then that also must mean urban homesteading and there are ways that this can be done, for sure.

What is homesteading?

Homesteading, at its best, is a way of transforming kills and values into a lifestyle, no matter where one feels at home.

Many of us, sadly, now have to relearn how to homestead – regardless of location – because so many of the necessary skills that were once considered an ordinary part of life were traded in for a manufactured life of relative ease and convenience over the course of just a few generations – less maybe even than that – and have thus but been lost.

You can basically homestead wherever you life. The skills can be applied in most, if not indeed all, settings.

Homesteading can be a state of mind and is a way of living lighter on the Earth and in harmony with Mother.

While in an urban setting not all aspects and skills of homesteading will come into play many can and do and thus the urban homesteader can live lighter on the Planet too.

In a suburban setting more of the skills come in to play and those are nigh on all those that also would be employed in a rural setting.

We must, however, get away from the notion of homesteading being about a plot of land somewhere very rural and of total self-sufficiency and of independence.

The modern homesteader must be part of the world and not withdraw from it, whether in a rural setting or in suburban or urban.

It is the mindset of homesteading that may just save us and the Planet, as long as we all get into that frame of mind, and this must happen in town and countryside.

Is urban homesteading possible?

It better is for that is where most folks live today; not in rural areas, and, if we would all go “back to the land”, as in countryside, as in rural, there would be no rural places left anymore.

The “back to the land movement attitude must change into a “back to yard movement” if we want to have a chance of survival and living somewhat the “good life” everywhere.

While total self-sufficiency is not something that ever will be completely achievable some of it is and that even in a suburban and urban setting.

Urban homesteading is feasible and even possible as it all depends on one's mindset and outlook. Food can be grown in many a place, from a balcony or patio, backyard, to allotment and community garden and, as in the case of some places in New York already practiced, even on the roofs of apartment blocks.

The rest of homesteading is something that fits in anywhere for, predominately, it is a philosophy of living lighter on the Earth with using fewer resources.

Met Office warns cities must adapt to cope with killer heat waves

Met Office warns number of nights yearly of dangerous temperatures to increase 5-fold

New report predicts number of city heat wave warnings will increase five-fold within the next 30 years

The number of nights each year when temperatures in British cities reach dangerous levels will increase five-fold within the next 30 years, according to a new report from the Met Office. The report warns town planners and developers will have to adapt to cope with rising average temperatures.

This report, which is based on the latest computer models, predicts that the anticipated two degree increase in average temperatures over the next 30 to 50 years will include a significant increase in the frequency of heat waves.

These heat waves will be particularly badly felt in urban centers, where the so-called "heat island effect" ensures that cities retain heat during the night.

According to the Met Office, it expects to issue official heat wave warnings for urban centers four times more frequently than it does currently as the number of nights each year when temperatures stay above 20C rises from two to 10.

Hot nights are one of the main causes of fatalities during heat waves as elderly people and young children in particular struggle to recover from the heat of the day. During the 2003 heat wave between 20,000 and 35,000 excess deaths were believed to have resulted from heat exhaustion, including 2,000 people in the UK.

The report will further increase pressure on town planners and developers to better adapt cities to cope with higher summer temperatures, by providing more shade, green spaces and efficient cooling technologies. It will also strengthen the case for pilot projects that propose painting building's white to help them keep cool and reduce the "heat island" effect.

"A 2C rise in average temperatures may not sound very much but there would be a much bigger rise in extreme temperatures on the hottest days and nights," said Vicky Pope, head of climate advice at the Met Office. "We will need to adapt if we are to avoid the sort of serious impact we saw in 2003."

The problem is that the report is based on “computer models” and this is where we hit a snag for any computer modeling works on the “GIGO” principle, that is to say that you get out what you put in, aka “garbage in garbage out”.

We must, in my opinion, be very careful with computer modeling. In 2009 we saw how great computer models are for even shortish range forecast when we were told that we were going to have a “barbeque summer” which turned out to be more like a wet seasons than a BBQ summer.

Question authority & think for yourself

While this is something that has gotten me into hot water more than once I will continue to do this and I advice everyone to do the same, whether as regards to issues regarding climate change and how they affect us – and by golly, will that affect us – or as to what is green and what is not, or to what our governments tell us.

Climate Change is real but the term global warming that has been employed all those previous days is misleading and it has been obvious to me for a very long time.

In addition to that all the efforts, currently undertaken, officially, to reduce CO2 and other GHGs, especially by using bio-fuels and hybrid cars is a joke and will get us nowhere bar deeper into the you-know-what.

A total and complete rethink of how we live and do things is required and not just a rethink but a complete and utter U-turn if we really want to stand a chance to continue living on this Planet.

There is so much greenwash out there with governments and industry heading those that talk it all the time.

Hybrid cars are what? No, they are not half-gas half-electric. They need gasoline to run and use inertia energy too charge a battery that can be used on certain occasions. Hybrids are a joke. We need real electric cars and vans and not hybrids.

And in general we will have to rethink the ways we travel and get about, and not just think about it but actually do it. Walking and cycling will have to become, once again, the primary mode of transportation, with public transport for longer distances, such as trains.

Farm operations may, once again, use the horse and cart for transportation and the horse with plow and other implements for other operations. The rest will have to be done by people again and also oxen.

But the governments are not going to tell you that it will be that radical that we will have to change. But we will have to do it or we have no chance of survival on the Earth. The Planet cannot support our current affluence. The American way of life currently meant that the USA requires around three Earths in order to support that way and that just is not feasible.

Does anyone really tell you that, however. No, they do not. Thus questions everything and think for yourself.

And this applies for everything that those that think they are in authority say, for doping they do something entirely different most of the time.

They do not like when you do that and neither when you think for yourself but you must do it in order to be better prepared.

Do not accept as gospel anything anyone – especially people who think that they are in charge and have power over you – try to tell you. There are hidden agendas in most places and that includes especially the churches and not just the Roman church.

Many so-called real Christian churches are run by people who are power crazy and who are hungering after total authority over other human beings. Too many times have I seen it and experienced it.

The campaign against the Health Care Bill that President Obama tried to introduce in the USA is a prime example here when and where pastors of various churches claimcs, for instance that if Prof. Hawkins would be living in the UK he would be left to die. Well he lives in the UK and is very much being cared for through the British National Health Service.

However, even when Prof. Hawkins came to the States trying to rectify those false claims those selfsame pastors and leaders continued with their lies, even claiming that it was Prof. Hawkins who was lying.

Thus, question every authority and especially that of supposed leaders of churches and such like.

As far as the churches and their claims go, do question everything and search for the truth yourself. You do not need anyone interpreting anything for you. Think for yourself and do the same with regards to everything.

I see a lot of falsehood amongst the so-called American patriot movement where emails with stuff are being circulated, 90% of which is stuff that has been made up.

One of those “sources” is someone who calls him- or herself “Christian Research”, trying to make himself important, who circulates material that could even be seen as treasonous, because the material is slandering the current President of the United States, Barak Hussein Obama. Material which is made up by that person or others of equally ill intent.

While, as said, I question everything and hence have no time for any leaders of any kind, including the supposed ones of my own People, I do find it rather distasteful when people make up lies and more than that about others.

The cold war, to a degree, also ran on that as did the “weapons of mass destructions” that Sadam Hussein supposedly had in Iraq capable of reaching UK targets within 45 minutes. The latter was intelligence gathered by some agent from a taxi driver in Baghdad. But that “intelligence” was used as an excuse for going to war against Iraq.

The true reason was? Just one word made of three letters O-i-l. The only reason. Not freeing the people of Iraq, not chemical and biological weapons, not fighting Al Qaida; the reason was simply oil.

Afghanistan is the same. It also is all about oil even though the country has none. It is, however, strategically positioned to but Iran between the anvil and the hard place. That is also why the “war” is now being extended into Pakistan and is being referred to already as the “Af-Pak” conflict.

Oil is also the reason why the US and other NATO countries have bases in the other -stans, such as Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; both countries where human rights are trodden underfoot on a daily basis. Together with Af-Pak and Iraq the powers-that-be thus have Iran in a pincer and Iran could very well be the next target.

Why this issue with oil, ask yourself. Why do we fight wars over it, as this very moment?

It points to something they are not going to tell us – yet again – and that is that we have reached and gone past Peak Oil and it is about securing the oil ensuring that no one but they have the hand on the tap.

I hope I have given you here some pointers as to why you should question authority and think for yourself in all matters. We are all being lied to by the powers-that-be on a daily, nay hourly, basis.

Is Cloud Computing green?

Cloud computing – from storage to entirely working online with a number of applications, such as Google Docs, etc – is being touted as a very green and environmentally friendly way of computing.

As someone who is a bit computer and Internet savvy I am no fan of “the cloud” and that for more than one reason, with security being one of them.

I am also not at all convinced that this is a greener way than, say, a 4TB mini-rack on my desk.

Yes, I am fully aware of the fact that I cannot have that with me while traveling and using my netbook on he go, but – seriously – do I really need to be able to access all my stored data while away from the office and home? Personally, I do not think so.

Cloud computing is just a hype and not just in the field of green IT; it is a hype per se.

They want to sell us storage telling us that it is going to be so much safer than us having it in house, and that it will save in this and in that, etc. but my concern is twofold at least and one is that the energy stuff is, alas, not correct, as such data centers take a huge amount of energy to maintain and the other aspect is the security aspect.

The biggest problem to me is the security and privacy aspect if I would think of using the cloud for storage and computing, aside from the environmental impact.

How can all those data centers that are needed to power the “cloud” be greener than small racks that are powered with 12V DC?

I am no technician working on such levels and neither an economist but, as far as I am concerned, I cannot see that there will be any savings if we all head for the cloud, bar, maybe, that organizations can save money as far as staffing costs for IT departments are concerned, as this could lead to a reduction in staff.

Dependent, obviously, on what is to be done in the cloud things may even out but as far as I am see it, at least at present, cloud computing is neither green nor secure.

Gross Domestic Product

When thinking of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) we should think of the word gross, as in gross, as in yuck.

The entire issue about the economy, economic growth and the GDP is something that is totally and utterly unsustainable but then, so again, is the way that the governments borrow money.

Most countries are so indebted to bank and other lenders that, were they a business they would have been wound up a long time ago. Still the governments, in the main, carry in business as usual wasting money in ways that are just not funny and this is equally so for central governments as for local ones.

Does the offices in town halls and such really run their heating at 25C while the general public is being told to turn their thermostats down to around 18C in order save CO2 and thus the Planet.

When it comes to the governments it is always a case of “do as we tell you and don't do as we do”. Not that any normal human being would be able to afford wastage of that kind, even if it would be on the smaller scale of a business or a household.

Military spending is something that takes, in many countries, even in those of NATO, the largest slice. They say that that is needed for the defense of the realm but this one must seriously doubt, especially when it comes to nuclear weapons which, as we all know, cannot really be used without causing ourselves serious problems.

While the Cold War and MAD (mutually assured destruction) may, to a degree, be over – and that is even more a reason to get rid of those nuclear weapons – the use of one of them would set enough nasty stuff free to have serious consequences for all of us.

The entire military posturing of the likes of America, Britain, and others, and the serious expenditures associated with it, has all to do with playing empire still and trying to be big. And the bigger the club the more they think the other side will stand back.

On the other hand, we are also seeing why all the military hardware; the war for oil that is being fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yes, I know that Afghanistan does not have oil but...

...I digressed a little, once again.

I am no economist but I know that the entire talk of economic growth and the need for it and all that jazz is a load of bull dust, as our Australian cousins would say.

They talk about economic output and all such stuff as to what a country produces but a country produces nothing; it is its people, its business that do. Hence the entire talk is not very true.

How did we function some centuries ago when nothing got measured in this way? Quite nicely, methinks, though there were, in those days lots of poor and some very rich – in Europe at least. One of the reason so many people looked for a better life in countries far away, such as the Americas and some found it too.

In those days the smith was happy to make whatever the people needed and wanted, knives, plowshares, scythes, sickles, etc., and put his pride in the fact that the tools that he made would last for generations. He did not look for growth but a way of making a decent living for himself and his family without exploiting the customers.

Nowadays, however, the majority of manufacturers are aiming only at more and more gross profits and bankers at more and more gross bonuses too.

Such growth is gross and we must get away from such operations and get back to economics as if people and the Planet, especially, mattered.

How do I get rid of Dandelion in my garden?

This is a question I get asked so many times and to be honest, if I had a Pound for every time I get asked this I could be rich by now.

I really love to see the looks on people's faces when I then tell them “eat them”.

“Eat them?” they normally ask astounded and in disbelief. They look at me with even greater disbelief when I then proceed to tell them – which is the honest truth – that I actually grow Dandelion purposely in my garden.

But the truth is that Dandelion is edible and makes a great salad vegetable and also the flowers can be turned into dandelion wine.

Dandelion is on of the few milky sap plant, if not indeed the only milky sap plant, that can be eaten without any ill effects and which in fact is good for you.

And Dandelion is not the only so-called weed that I “cultivate” for food or medicinal uses. I have also got nettles (not that I need to bother much with cultivating them; they are just there) and Ribwort. The next on the list to get is Common Sorrel.

When I was a child one of my favorite things to eat was Dandelion Sandwiches. Those are simply two slices of bread with butter and chopped Dandelion leaves added. For a better one even use Mayonnaise instead of butter.

So, instead of complaining about Dandelion in your garden go and make use of it.
