Does a screen saver save energy?

No, far from it...

EcoButtonWeb But you can turn the monitor off, that saves energy (if you use a desktop). You also do not need – far from it – the Eco Button. Your computer has energy saving functions; use them.

Screen savers, on the other hand, do not save energy at all, whatever you may think, or have been led to believe. In fact they use a great deal of energy as the computer, in fact, is processing buy running the screen savers. Also, screen savers are about Noah's age and are no longer needed today.

The Eco Button, which I have mentioned above, is a gadget that people will like to sell you with the claim that it will save you energy in your computer usage and that it, thus, is going to save CO2. To say that the marketeers for this products are a little on the economic side with the truth would be a serious understatement. The Eco Button just is another version of the sleep function that your PC or Laptop actually comes with. So why would you, therefore, need a gadget that – unless someone is giving it to you on a trade show or such (and if you can refuse it) – costs you up to $20?

Use your computer's energy saving functions. That's what they are there for. But the screen saver function is NOT one of them.

Every computer operating system is different and the keyboard controls that work with Microsoft Windows computers will not work, in general, with a Linux computer, for instance.

If you use a desktop, and as far as I am concerned, despite the fact that, according to sources a laptop uses up to 90% less energy than a desktop PC, as far as sustainability goes a desktop is the better way, and a CRT monitor then turn the monitor off when you are not using the computer. A CRT monitor is a serious energy hog. If you have an FST monitor then let the computer do it for you. The time is stands idle is fine.

Once again, don't use a screen saver to save energy; it won't work and don't use an Eco Button either.

EU Code paves way for ‘Data Centre 2.0’

London, UK: The agreement on a pan-European ‘green’ Code of Conduct for Data Centers now paves the way for a new generation of facilities which will raise the bar on power efficiency and use of renewable energy sources.

Is Cloud Computing green?

Cloud computing – from storage to entirely working online with a number of applications, such as Google Docs, etc – is being touted as a very green and environmentally friendly way of computing.

As someone who is a bit computer and Internet savvy I am no fan of “the cloud” and that for more than one reason, with security being one of them.

I am also not at all convinced that this is a greener way than, say, a 4TB mini-rack on my desk.

Yes, I am fully aware of the fact that I cannot have that with me while traveling and using my netbook on he go, but – seriously – do I really need to be able to access all my stored data while away from the office and home? Personally, I do not think so.

Cloud computing is just a hype and not just in the field of green IT; it is a hype per se.

They want to sell us storage telling us that it is going to be so much safer than us having it in house, and that it will save in this and in that, etc. but my concern is twofold at least and one is that the energy stuff is, alas, not correct, as such data centers take a huge amount of energy to maintain and the other aspect is the security aspect.

The biggest problem to me is the security and privacy aspect if I would think of using the cloud for storage and computing, aside from the environmental impact.

How can all those data centers that are needed to power the “cloud” be greener than small racks that are powered with 12V DC?

I am no technician working on such levels and neither an economist but, as far as I am concerned, I cannot see that there will be any savings if we all head for the cloud, bar, maybe, that organizations can save money as far as staffing costs for IT departments are concerned, as this could lead to a reduction in staff.

Dependent, obviously, on what is to be done in the cloud things may even out but as far as I am see it, at least at present, cloud computing is neither green nor secure.

Defra to move staff to green laptops

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced in July of 2008 that it was moving 10,000 civil servants to energy-saving laptops, as part of its Renew IT programme.

The move to laptops started in June and is planned for completion by the end of December. It will cover all staff within the department and its agencies Natural England and Animal Health, with the cost included within the department's outsourcing contract with IBM.

However, whether this has happened as yet or not cannot be ascertained at this moment.

Helen Ghosh, Defra's permanent secretary, said that most carbon emissions were generated through the production of hardware. "We are all going to have laptops which are produced in a very sustainable chain but which also have some of those key up to date facilities to make sure they are sustainable in use," she told the Commons' Environmental Audit Committee, in evidence published on 14 July 2008.

Ghosh added that the Renew IT programme will reduce the number of pieces of hardware any employee can have. She said she has a fixed personal computer in her office, a laptop for home use and a Blackberry for mobile use. "In the new world I will be able to have one item, which is a laptop which I shall carry to and from on my bicycle and plug in at the office or carry home and use at home," she said.

The department said that staff will receive a Lenovo ThinkPad X61, running Microsoft's Vista operating system and Office 2007 software, along with a laptop rucksack. These will be usable anywhere, are encrypted and have the option of logging on using a fingerprint.

"Introducing a single device, or identical kit for all staff, means a greener IT system as well as reduced physical asset charges and support costs for Defra," said a spokesperson, adding that the laptops use up to 70% less power than personal computers.

As they are smaller, they will also allow the department to make better use of its office space, the spokesperson added.

In her evidence to the committee, Ghosh said that Defra has donated a "substantial amount" of hardware to the newly formed UK Borders Agency, as a result of having hardware to spare through its upgrading programme. "So we are re-using within government some IT," she added.

The committee's report said that increased use of IT is blamed as the biggest single factor behind rising emissions of greenhouse gases from civil government departments.

It said attention should be paid to reconditioning hardware rather than buying new, and to the amounts of energy used for both equipment and for its air-conditioning.

Defra has also recently said that it is testing the power saving options within Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system, as well as getting security guards to switch off machines that are left on without explanation.

On 17 July, the Cabinet Office released Greening Government ICT, recommending steps departments should take to improve their performance in this area.

Let us but hope that this is not all just some greenwashing yet again and that this department will not just also be the only one that will make that move.

What also is something that I just cannot understand is why so many governments – here and abroad – still tie themselves to Microsoft's products when there are perfectly well developed and functioning Open Source software is available, from full operating systems – most which have a far small footprint than any of Microsoft's ones – over full office suites that are also fully compatible with MS Office, to other application software. All of those also, if i may add, primarily, to be had for the asking price of zero.

Some governments are beginning to understand than a number of savings, of the financial and environmental, can be made and had with the use of Open Source and especially a fair number of local authorities and government departments in other countries of Europe are going the Open Source route to get the savings on both those levels.

Hardware obsolescence is not built into the likes of Linux operating system, for instance, and such, and most have much lower requirements as far as processing power and RAM are concerned that they can be installed on older machines and still have them run at cost saving level.

In addition to that Laptops and Netbooks preloaded with Linux distributions are cheaper to purchase because of firstly no cost for the OS and secondly no need for extreme high processing power and huge RAM. The Eee PC from ASUS is, for instance, one of those that comes to mind here and nowadays one can get even get machines from other manufacturers pre-installed with the Linux distro of your choice reducing the cost often per machine by as much as $200.

But, it would appear that the majority of governments, local and central, here and abroad, do not understand that this is possible and rather stays with the giant Microsoft who will take them to the cleaners as regards to license fees.

Green IT having marginal impact only

Organizations in the UK employing green IT policies are making small savings, according to parts distributor Bell Micro. However, the level of energy savings achieved casts doubts upon the current value of those green activities implemented to date.

The results have been extracted from some research commissioned in 2008. Headline findings include:

* Despite the fact that much has been talked about green IT in the UK, only 21% of organizations have adopted a formal, written policy on what the IT department should be doing to make the organization more environmentally-friendly.

* Many energy saving measures are adopted by fewer than 1 in 4 organizations with a green IT policy, e.g. using energy-saving hardware and software (25%), use of virtualization technology (13%) and implementation of digital video communications (11%)

* Outsourcing key IT functions and processes is a very common practice in the UK. Of 73% of organizations handling all or some of their IT tasks in this way, only 27% bother to check the green credentials of their suppliers.

I assume that it will still take a while for people to realize that green IT can save them money and especially here if they get away from proprietary software for which licenses they have to pay lots of money.

Whether or not one uses an entire Open Source operating system, Open Source software is available also to run on Windows such as, for instance, Open Office. This is a very adequate replacement for Microsoft Office – except that it does not have Outlook or the silly Notes and such – and Open Office can save all documents automatically as MS files.

The Outlook issue can also be overcome by the use of another program, and Open Source email client, which integrates into others. So there is no need to forgo Outlook.

Other programs too are in the Open Source field that enable savings to be made and also to green the IT infrastructure of a company, however small or big.

As with all things green in the office and workplace IT seems to also lag behind. Research has shown that while many employees in offices want to do the right green things they have little or no say as regards to the issue and to the right equipment and products that would enable them to be green in the office.

It would appear that with the IT sector in business and industry it is the same thing and that companies do not seem to get it – at least not properly. A problem factor here is also that on the IT level they very often are tied to proprietary software through a variety of vendors and have no way out of that situation.

When it comes to Green IT the readers, I am sure, will know that I am very much an advocate – and not only in respect of Green IT – of Open Source software and this not just because, theoretically, it is free as in gratis, but because you do not get tied down to a particular brand.

The main problem still is though that much of he hardware does not always – immediately – connect up with say Linux operating systems. Nor are some websites, notably the ones of the European Union, usable with browsers other than Internet Explorer, which means that they do not render properly in, say, Firefox or Opera, and hence cannot interacted with in a proper manner.

As far as Green IT is concerned, however, Open Source enables savings on a financial level as well as on an equipment level for most of the Open Source applications are not as power hungry as are those made by Microsoft or other proprietary software makers. Savings all round that way.

ASUS unveiled Green IT at BETT Show

ASUS has been exhibiting at the BETT Show at Olympia, from January 14 – January 17, 2009, for the first time.

Here they have unveiled a range of technical innovations designed to reduce the impact of computing on the environment, including a revolutionary use of bamboo.

As well as launching new products ASUS has been showcasing a number of their most notable products from this year including;

1. The VESA-mountable, economic Eee Box, the world’s smallest PC that consumes up to a penny-saving 90% less power than conventional PCs, and which can be mounted, for instance, at the back of a computer monitor.

2. The compact and versatile new Eee Top all-in-one touchscreen PC that is ideally suited to the classroom with options on either desk or wall mounting, though the wall mounting is, as far as I understand, not as ready to roll.

3. A selection from the trend-setting Eee PC range of ultra-portable Netbooks will also be on display, some of which are rather very new as well.

Having recently acquired an Eee PC 900 for use on the move and such and the fact that I am, so far, extremely happy with it, I would most dearly love to be able to review the new models, especially the new versions of the Eee PC.

I must say though that for real computing power on the go the 6-cell battery is a must. The standard 3-cell that comes with, say, the Eee PC 900, like the one I have got, does not last for very long when on the move and using battery power only.

Saving the world through software - Microsoft's green agenda

Software and the internet can play a great part in efforts to help the environment - as they did in winning the US Presidential election for Barack Obama.

This was the message of Microsoft's European chairman, Jan Meuhlfeit, when he spoke at a conference bringing together global business leaders in London recently.

Speaking at Green Strategy 08, Mr Meuhlfeit said that the huge public support - and funding - raised by Obama's campaign via the internet should be a lesson to those involved in the environmental movement.

"This is the first time that the internet and technology have played a key role in the elections," he said.

"Obama has said he collected 86% of the money for his campaign through the internet.

"If we're serious about the environment we should definitely use this way too."

He said the internet, although only 6,000 days old, was already shaping history and had a lot more still to offer.

"This is the first time in human history when the young generation uses current technology much better than the previous generation," Mr Meuhlfeit said.

"And I do believe that this generation is much more environmentally aware, so this will have a positive effect on society."

This can certainly been seen in a lot of the online fundraising in general now, via, say Facebook and such, and the book “Causewired” by Tom Watson (see review) talks about that in great detail.

While the benefits of the net as medium to get the message across were obvious, he said, that was not all the IT industry had to offer.

He spoke of the magic of software, highlighting how virtual meetings, conferences and other communication technologies could massively reduce the need for transport, thus reducing energy use and carbon emissions.

He also recognized the IT industry's need to cut its own energy consumption and gave examples of how Microsoft itself was doing this.

A new data center in Dublin, for example, will use only 50-70% of the energy of equivalent facilities due to investments in energy efficiency technology while Microsoft's base of operations in Reading is run on energy entirely from renewable sources.

The company's latest operating system, Vista, is also more energy efficient than its Windows predecessors, he said, and while that might not make much difference on a computer-by-computer scale, it soon adds up when one considers how many machines around the world are running on an MS platform.

100 million PCs running Vista rather than previous Windows incarnations, he said, was equivalent to taking 8 million cars off the road in terms of CO2 emissions.

Using Linux, such a Ubuntu and others are even better in this and are something that Vista can never ever meet.

Aside from Ubuntu there are other Linux distros and they all have a mu h smaller footprint on the computer and are not as resource hungry as are most of Microsoft's product. With Ubuntu – and other Linux distros – the entire OS with all office software, and other software, including games, comes on a single CD. This means the entire thing is less than 800MB. Some can be even smaller still. I believe the term “no contest” comes to mind here.

Many people are afraid of attempting to use other operating systems than Windows simply because they think that others need coding or do not have an intuitive interface and such. Well, rest assured that most Linux distros now have and many of them are better than Windows and much easier to use.

I have been using Ubuntu on one PC for a considerable while now as a workhorse for my writing work and have now, only in the beginning of December 2008, acquired an ASUS Eee PC 900 NetBook with the 16GB SSD and Linux and, well, it is great and I use it much more than the Vista laptop.

For one it is the speed that I like and then also the size, I guess, for it takes so much less space than that laptop. The other factor, no doubt, is because it is Linux.

Software and the right kind of hardware can do some work in way of saving the planet but this is not primarily Microsoft's domain. All MS is interested in, as w all know, is to keep its market monopoly and they guys at Redmond are rather afraid of Open Source.

IT industry urged to rethink concept of 'green'

Our high-tech world has a hidden cost, the Green Economics Institute warned

Making IT and technology more green is about more than just switching your monitor off at night – it is also about all the environmental, social and ethical issues surrounding production of the equipment.

That was the message from Miriam Kennet, director of the Green Economics Institute, as she addressed the Green IT Expo that was held from 4th – 5th of November 2008 at the Barbican in London.

"Being 'green' is about providing social and environmental justice at the same time" she said. "It is up to the user and the buyer to make sure that what they are doing is not causing harm."

Mobile phones are one example of a widely-used piece of technology which is linked to the exploitation and suffering of people in developing countries, she told delegates.

Mobiles use coltan, an ore produced from the mineral tantalum, which is mainly found in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the United Nations, smuggling and exportation of coltan has helped fuel the war in the Congo, a crisis that has resulted in millions of deaths since 1998.

The mineral is often mined by prisoners in exchange for early release or by child labour, Ms Kennet said.

"We are all complicit in this – everyone who has a mobile phone," she said. "If we want to live in this high-tech world we have to think about these supply chains.

"It's up to us in the high-tech world to see if we can engineer our supply chains to make them more green."

But this does not mean that companies and individuals should ignore the more obvious ways to help the environment, by reducing their energy use and CO2 emissions, Ms Kennet added.

"It's going to be one of the big stories, I think, as IT develops," she said.

A report produced last year by UK charity Global Action Plan revealed that the ICT sector has a carbon footprint similar to that of the aviation industry.

The ethical impacts are, however, rarely looked at, and the same thing is true not just for the manufacture of the products but also and especially as regards to the WEE Recycling of computers and such like. Where do they end up so often? In countries of the Third World where they are dismantled under appalling conditions with no protection for the workers and the environment.

And when it comes to the recycling of such devices, whether mobile phones, PCs, laptops, servers, etc. the fact remains that it is done, predominately in Third World countries without protection and concern for the workers or the environment. The carbon footprint, or as I prefer it, the environmental footprint, is thus huge, and the ethical implications are bigger still.

Green IT must also include ethical IT, as all other green aspects have to do as well. Often industry especially tends to forget the ethics of things while still claiming that this or that is “green”.

Recognise The Necessity For Measurability And Accountability Of Energy Consumption

First Day Keynotes At Green IT Expo 2008 – 4th – 5th November, Barbican Exhibition Centre, London

Potential methods and models for measuring energy efficiency and the cost and environmental impact of green IT, were the two major themes highlighted by the keynote speakers on the first day at Green IT Expo 2008, the UK’s first free-to-attend event focusing on sustainable computing.

At yesterday’s opening plenary, Senior Vice President of Forrester Research, Christopher Mines, discussed ways of accelerating and implementing successful green initiatives to ensure IT suppliers and their customers are actively reducing the harmful impacts of computing on the environment. Mines affirmed that green IT does not have to mean higher expenses and outputs for businesses and that energy savings can be acquired by simply turning off unused equipment, recycling IT consumables and implementing virtualisation techniques to cut down on commuting and business travel. He also highlighted the results of a recent Global Green IT Online Survey, which identified that as initiatives and methods of energy measurement are being discussed more publicly, the number of businesses implementing green IT practices has increased by 14% since October 2007.

Following Mines was Head of ICT for Sustainable Growth (Unit H4) at the European Commission, Colette Maloney, who outlined the EC’s initiatives to improve energy efficiency and establish policy frameworks for a lasting contribution to Information Communication Technology’s (ICTs) energy footprint. Maloney reinforced the importance of identifying a widespread standard for measuring and reporting energy consumption. Between 2007 and 2008 the European Commission spent 20 million Euros over 11 research projects that looked at ways of improving energy efficiency at the design phase and ways ICT can serve energy efficient systems.

Maloney explained that individuals cannot see how their energy savings can affect things but ‘if we were more aware of the energy we consume from engaging in different activities, then we could pro-actively work to change our consumption.’

Later in the morning, Chief Technology Officer at IBM, Steve Bowden, looked at what might happen to data centres if they do not start looking at methods to improve the environment and cost efficiency and start taking control of energy saving and cooling requirements. Bowden stated that if left unchecked, the cost to power and cool servers in the future might equal the cost of acquisition and by 2010, there will be over 35 million servers installed worldwide and the cost of powering and cooling them could increase by 54% (Source: IDC – Worldwide Server Power and Cooling Expense 2006-1010).

Energy efficiency is one of the top five concerns for leaders of public sector institutions, government officials, and for CEOs. Managing Director of Green IT Expo organiser Revolution Events, Richard Tribe comments, “We learnt that it is possible for businesses to reduce their operational costs whilst saving between 40-50% in energy, it is just a case of diagnosing which areas could be improved, measuring the energy that could be saved and implementing these processes. It is in our commercial interest to use less energy, drive fewer miles, generate less waste, recycle more, and we must reduce our impacts in these areas to the absolute minimum where the investment and payback is acceptable.”

The latest confirmed keynotes come from the Chief Technology Officer at IBM, Steve Bowden and the Director of Development Platform Evangelism at Microsoft, Mark Taylor.

Bowden will be looking closely at the competitive pressures, global economic outlooks and challenges to stay green that are impacting every business. The keynote will also explore the means of reducing and controlling rising energy costs, improving speed and data centre security. “Many people are in disbelief that there is a server available that is as fast and powerful as a regular one but that uses half the electricity,” says Managing Director of VeryPC, Peter Hopton. “The most popular common server has operational CO2 emissions similar to that of a 4x4 travelling 10,000KM per year, whereas the VeryPC equivalent is similar to that of a Toyota Prius travelling the same distance. It is the first time such an initiative has been done with servers and we hope that by offering free servers to businesses, we will be able to have a real influence in helping to reduce global carbon emissions.”

LoCO2PC from Akhter Computers will see its first public outing at Green IT Expo 2008. LoCO2PC is a low energy PC that uses just 55W in normal use and qualifies under Europe’s stringent Energy Star 4.0 qualification. In sleep mode, the PC uses just 3W of power and empowers companies to reduce their carbon footprint by up to five tonnes and save an estimated £100 to £200 a year on power bills.

Developing greener data centres

The ever-increasing power consumption of data centres is rapidly putting energy efficiency at the top of the data centre manager's agenda. Even if energy costs and the threat of a shortage of power to support data centres weren't driving this efficiency agenda, the threat of carbon capping and legislation soon will. Reducing the demands being made on the data centre by businesses is not an option so what are the alternatives?

This article looks at a combination of subtle trends driving the impending power crisis in the data centre, strategies and technologies to reduce power consumption whilst meeting the evolving needs of the business, and approaches for the short-term and long-term future.

From barely being an issue a few years ago, the environmental impact of data centres has risen to the top of many IT managers’ agendas. The very real concerns over power consumption need a convergence of technological and non-technological solutions to mitigate/address the issue, says [name to come] from Cisco Systems.

How green is your data centre? Until recently, such a question would have raised eyebrows among IT managers. But with rising storage requirements and the levels of data centre infrastructure, the increase in power consumption of such facilities has been getting harder to ignore in recent years, despite the fact that accurate measures of data centre power use are difficult to come by.

Historically, power consumption has not been an issue for data centre managers for a number of reasons. First and foremost, data centres have often sat at the heart of strategic moves to expand or improve the business, and as such have not usually had to contend with cost-containment measures.

A second reason is that IT divisions have not traditionally had responsibility for the environmental impact of their data centres. Facilities departments usually foot the power bill and are often in charge of implementing environmentally-friendly practices.

Thirdly, there has never been much of a green alternative to data centres. Unlike, say, corporate air travel, you cannot just stop using IT storage systems and expect the enterprise to carry on as before.

As a consequence, some data centres have been allowed to turn into the gas guzzlers of the IT world. It takes about 830 pounds of coal to run a computer for a year. And in the case of servers, research by Intel shows less than 20 percent of power actually goes to the CPU.

This carefree attitude to power use is changing now, though, as companies face spiralling bills to maintain their sprawling data centre operations.

Data storage requirements are currently expanding at a compound annual growth rate of between 40 percent and 70 percent. Server use grew by 12 percent in 2005 and is expected to increase.

As a result, energy costs are expected to mushroom from 10 percent up to 30 percent of average IT budgets, overtaking all other forms of data centre expenditure and meaning IT managers will effectively loose a fifth of their budget to power consumption.

Exacerbating the problem is the fact that cooling tends to become less efficient as power consumption rises. The simplest way to increase cooling to a given rack of equipment is to simply open up more floor tiles.

While this is simple fix in the short run, it does not work much above two or three because cooling air being provided to one rack will be ‘stolen’ from adjacent racks, reducing the amount of cooling provided to neighbouring racks.

Another reason is that as more floor tiles are opened up for a particular rack, the distance from the tile to the rack increases. The cooling system ends up being less efficient because it ends up cooling the atmosphere in the data centre in addition to the equipment.

Both of these effects result in higher cooling bills, a reduced ability to cool equipment in the data centre on a per-rack basis and a less efficient cooling system.

Since cooling and heat removal are typically growth constraints in the data centre, this wasted cooling capability will act as a drag or a cap on growth.

Over the next three years, says Gartner, 50 percent of large organisations will face an annual energy bill that is higher than their yearly server budget. Google has already notoriously reached this point. And it gets worse.

In 2005, the University of Buffalo paid US$2.3 million for a new supercomputer, only to find there was not enough power to switch it all on.

An increasing number of data centre managers are similarly finding that there simply is not enough power available to expand their operations any further.

Gartner says most data centres are now operating at 100 percent capacity in terms of power and cooling, versus 70 percent capacity for data storage, meaning that energy, not memory, is now the main limiting factor on growth. (Availability of suitable space is also an issue.)

This puts data centre managers in a difficult position, since demand for IT storage is not going to go away.

If anything, compliance requirements such as the banking sector’s Basel II or Sarbanes-Oxley regulations, combined with the need to roll out ever faster and more complex IT applications, are increasing the demand for data centre services.

As a result, the only way to go is to cut power consumption and thereby reduce the environmental impact of data centre operations. Doing this is not easy. The actual amount of power required by data centre devices is only part of the equation.

Each watt consumed by IT infrastructure carries an additional ‘burden factor’ of between 1.8 and 2.5 for power consumption associated with cooling, lighting, conversion and distribution, all essential energy-consuming services that have to be taken into account in efficiency plans.

In addition, simply checking the power rating on the back of a device will not necessarily give you an accurate picture of how wasteful it is; its processing power and utilisation are also critical factors in determining its overall efficiency.

Because of all this, it is not easy to accurately measure and track data centre power consumption and even now few IT managers are building operating efficiency considerations into their purchasing criteria, although it is likely many will need to soon.

The good news is that recent developments by equipment vendors have led to a number of innovations that can help data centres run more efficiently. Server manufacturers, for example, are looking at introducing variable power consumption based on CPU activity.

The beneficial effects of this will be tempered, however, by the fact that server virtualisation strives to increase CPU utilisation to upwards of 80 percent.

Another option is the creation of blade centres and multi-core CPUs. This will raise the percentage of power going to the CPUs on a per-server basis, improving the overall power efficiency.

It will not necessarily reduce the power per rack, though, without other measures such as IO consolidation.

Where there is perhaps more scope for improvement is in the data centre’s network components, which can be used to create efficiencies in three ways:

  • By switching to devices that offer more processing power per watt.
  • By incorporating more services into each device, so that redundant devices can be removed from the infrastructure.
  • By using virtualisation to ensure that the remaining devices are used as efficiently as possible.
Looking at perhaps the most obvious measure for reducing power consumption, which is the efficiency of the devices themselves, it is fair to say that virtually all equipment manufacturers are working hard to bring leaner machines to market.

As an example, the efficiency of power supplies for the Cisco Catalyst 6500, the most widely used switch on the market, has improved from 70 percent to 80 percent since it was introduced in 1999.

Forthcoming Cisco power supplies are expected to be 90 percent efficient. At the same time, Cisco is continuing to reduce the power per port required by its data centre platforms, with a 30 percent to 50 percent reduction goal.

What is also significant about many of these new, more efficient platforms is that they can support a greater range of services. This can have a major impact on power consumption.

A typical application server may have multiple appliances associated with it, such as firewalls, secure sockets layer termination devices and load balancers, each with its own power and cooling requirements.

A rough and ready calculation shows these could represent up to an additional 2700W of power and cooling load per server, representing a considerable drain across the entire data centre.

Nowadays, however, functions such as security and load balancing can be incorporated into the network fabric, making it possible to eliminate the appliances and their associated power loads.

Doing this has several added bonuses. It lowers the complexity of the overall infrastructure, making it more manageable, reducing latency and eliminating single points of failure.

Finally, virtualisation can further increase disk utilisation by around 70 percent simply by incorporating all a data centre’s disparate storage devices into a single fabric that is then compartmentalised logically rather than physically.

In a virtual storage area network, each device can be ‘filled up’ to full capacity with data from various sources and applications, so fewer devices need to be used at any point in time.

In addition, the network can give priority to more efficient devices, so that those that represent the greatest drain on resources are only used when absolutely necessary.

The benefits of virtualisation can be significant. Taking a tape subsystem offline can save nearly EURO€3000 in power and cooling per year.

Taken together, these measures could reduce data centre power requirements by up to 85 percent, certainly enough to allow significant further expansion in storage area network use at current energy levels.

Storage area networking technologies can also help reduce server power requirements in a number of other ways.

Aside from power conversion losses, peripheral component interconnect cards and hard drives are the two biggest non-CPU power loads on a typical dual-core server, so moving to diskless servers will potentially remove a 72W load.

This translates into approximately 1.2kW per rack, in addition to reducing costs and improving the availability of servers. Another big area of opportunity is multifabric input/output and server I/O consolidation.

Consolidating storage and Ethernet connections on a single link reduces the number of network interface card ports required on the server (as well as switch ports), reducing the amount of cabling needed and thus improving airflow around the rack.

Furthermore, there are other areas of technical innovation that could help create further savings.

As an example, Cisco has an Automated Power Management System (AMPS) to control energy consumption in laboratories where it develops and tests new equipment.

These labs represent approximately 20 percent of Cisco's real estate, although the testing equipment is rarely used continuously. The system identifies equipment not in use and automatically switches it off.

Separately, Cisco is also partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to research technologies that could significantly reduce energy demands, as well as improve reliability and lengthen equipment life in data centres.

The technology eliminates power conversion losses by using DC (direct current) rather than AC (alternating current) power to provide electricity throughout the data centre.

According to Intel, AC to DC power conversion losses account for around 36 percent of the total server power budget in a typical data centre.

On a more general level, using IP networks to monitor and control energy use can help reduce power consumption across the business as a whole, a concept which Cisco has dubbed ‘Connected Real Estate’.

With all this, technology clearly remains only part of the answer to the issue of data centre power consumption. As indicated above, there can be challenges in identifying whose responsibility it is to deal with energy supply in the first place.

Organisations need to take a holistic view of the problem. However, it is a fact that technology can now have a significant impact on power consumption and it makes sense to start assessing developments in this field now.

Currently the power consumption of data centres is not regulated, but with climate change moving inexorably up the political agenda worldwide this is unlikely to remain the case for long.

And there are other pressing reasons to evolve to more environmentally-friendly operations as soon as possible, including the growing likelihood of outages as power and cooling systems come under increased stress.

Specifically regarding the network components of the data centre, there are a number of steps you can take now to reduce power consumption. They are:
  • Consolidate networks – fewer networks equals less cost and a reduced storage power draw.
  • Avoid gateways and consolidate functions – specialized appliances are not power efficient due to redundant internal cooling, switching and power conversion elements.
  • Bring in virtualisation – one network or network element per customer is inefficient in terms of power and space, so consider technologies such as Multiprotocol Label Switching to enable future virtualisation.
  • View power requirements holistically and prioritise efforts based upon reducing overall power consumption.
The need to save energy for the sake of the planet is now well established. Within data centres, the need to save energy is no less critical, not just for the sake of the environment but in order to ensure the enterprise’s viability, too. Now is the time to go green.

In today's world the screen saver is no longer needed, and it has not been needed for many years now. Our monitors are no longer the ones that can end up with so-called screen burn or burn in, as the old green and gray ones once did. So, why do you still use a screen saver.

You do not still use a screen saver, do you?
