Make your money go further by becoming a moreeco shopper

by Michael Smith

moreeco.com, which has been officially launched today, September 17, 2008, hosts some of the finest green online retailers whilst rewarding you and the planet for your ethical shopping habits.

moreeco.com has been created and designed to support and offer a choice of green retailers, reward customers who want to shop according to eco principles, and help to sustain the planet.

You can make your money go further … not only is your cash going to small, independent retailers who support a moreeco world, you are also getting more for your money by collecting points that you can redeem for a gift for yourself. The benefit goes further too, as for every 10 points you earn, moreeco offset 1Kg of CO2 for you, free of charge, through Climate Care.

More consumers want to buy green, ethical products and services, yet it is increasingly hard to find genuinely green retailers amidst companies exploiting the market with greenwash – making environmental claims that do not stack up. moreeco has done all the hard work for you – by researching and selecting genuinely green retailers based on environmental and ethical principles.

“Just a click away, moreeco.com shines a light on the greenest websites so that you can effortlessly make good, moreeco purchasing choices.” says Mark Philip-Sorensen, Founder

Retailers on the website all have green credentials and include a wide range of eco suppliers – from chocolate company Green & Blacks; to renewable energy providers Good Energy; to green insurance companies; to ethical fashion retailer, Adili.com, and ethical and eco department stores - ecotopia and ethicalsuperstore.com. All the featured green retailers are arranged in easy to navigate categories for the moreeco shopper to find what they want with ease.

Five easy steps to become a moreeco shopper

1. Ask questions. Where was the product made? How was it made? Who by? If the answers aren’t there, pick up the ‘phone or send an email to customer services and find out.

2. Support small, independent retailers. Do we want our high streets to look identical as the large supermarkets and shops roll around in money? Look for alternatives and shop locally or online for more thoughtful companies who care. It’s a myth that smaller retailers are more expensive.

3. Check out eco credentials. If it is organic certified then look for the Soil Association symbol, if it’s made of wood then look for the FSC label to make sure is it is sustainably-sourced. If you want to know if it has been fairly traded then look for the FAIRTRADE Mark. Trust your gut feeling – if environmental claims appear too good to be true and you don’t have time to investigate, they probably are.

4. Look at the packaging. Is it minimal? It is made of post-consumer waste? Can it be recycled? Avoid plastic as much as possible – and that includes your grocery bags.

5. Be rewarded for your loyalty and reward the planet. Remember the days when you shopped locally and the friendly shopkeeper would throw in a little extra treat? moreeco.com offers a similar vibe in the green cyber community. You can build up moreeco points as you shop that you can then exchange for a wide array of products or services, from magazine subscriptions, to books, to products, or gift vouchers, that you can redeem with the retailers.

Be rewarded for shopping with eco principles and log on to moreeco.com.

moreeco has already been dubbed ‘more dark green’ than other rewards site online compared to its competitors by SmartPlanet .com

Household expenditure on ethical goods and services has almost doubled in the past five years: on average, every household in the UK spent £664 in line with their ethical values in 2006 compared with just £366 in 2002, an increase of 81 per cent. [The Ethical Consumerism Report 2007]

ClimateCare reduce global greenhouse gases through a range of projects around the world that not only make real reductions in carbon emissions, but also make a difference to people’s lives.

moreeco.com was founded by Mark Philip-Sorensen, with his wife Lizzie, as they became more aware of their own environmental impact when their children were born and they decided to escape the rat race and to do something about it:

After spending fourteen years in the corporate world I decided it was time to try something different. Both my wife and I hoped to create something that improves our lives today but also considers and helps to protect our children’s future.”

This is very exciting. So many people are shopping with a conscience and it is fantastic to use the principles of affiliate marketing from the corporate world to make a difference to people and their environment – rewarding people for good thinking.”
