Fourteen Year Old creates New Social Website to Connect Stories that Inspire

My Name My Story is a new online platform to share inspirational stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. According to the founder Amit Dodani, a freshman in high school, “Most people look at other peoples’ success as an instance of luck, not recognizing what the person had to overcome to succeed. I believe that everyone has a story.” He had an urge to collect these stories of people overcoming, to inspire those that had similar challenges. Amit passionately states, “the current socio-political environment breathes a sense of fear and despair in the hearts of today’s youth: our future leaders. To fill this gap of inspiration, I felt a need for this platform. So that our generation too can hope, believe, succeed and inspire.”

"One Million Stories that Inspire."

We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.

North Hills, CA, February 2012 : My Name My Story announced the official launch of http://www.mynamemystory.org, an online platform to share inspirational stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

As soon as one logs onto the, antique scroll-like, website they are immediately drawn to the tab labeled “The Stories.” Some stories show the struggle and victory of people who have overcome cyber-bullying, epilepsy or a near fatal car accident, or even the story of strength and overcoming from a 9/11 World Trade Center collapse survivor. Amit shares his own story of challenges and victories that eventually inspired him to create http://www.mynamemystory.org: “When I was in elementary and middle school, I had various speaking issues that had required professional help. That entire process molded me into a sort of shy and nervous child. Finally, in 8th grade I got involved in my school’s Mock Trial and Debate team. A year later, with the support of some incredible coaches and mentors, I ended up becoming one of the best speakers, winning various levels of County, State & National Speaking & Debating tournaments.” As Amit continued his speaking career, his peers often thought that he was naturally born with the ability to speak, “they would actually get both - shocked and inspired when they heard my story!” That’s when he realized the need for a platform that tells the “whole” story. As one goes through all the stories and reads about the struggles and the victories, one can feel the impact these stories will have on people across the world.

Once someone is inspired to share their own story, they can easily submit their story on http://www.mynamemystory.org. According to the website, the story just needs to satisfy one criterion: “does the story inspire the best in human kind.” Once this simple requirement is met, the story is posted on the website for the world to experience. Amit explains, “I believe that when we share our stories, we are able to connect the world and inspire someone all the way across the globe - people that we may never meet or know. The ability to impact the future generations of the world in that way – now that is powerful!” He continues to add, “like Roosevelt had said: we cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”

Although the website is open to everyone around the world, one of the key elements of the My Name My Story (MNMS) cause is a grassroots school and college outreach program. MNMS is working with, and looking for, volunteer “MNMS Members”, across the world in high schools and colleges. Their role is to reach out into the student body and encourage the students to read the stories and to identify stories within their school that can be shared on the website. There are also plans for “MNMS Live!” events in communities and schools around the world starting the summer of 2012.

About My Name My Story:
http://www.mynamemystory.org was founded by Amit Dodani. His parents, who are entrepreneurs themselves, run several companies including their own strategic business consulting company, provide the business support for the project. The rest of the day to day operation and fundraising for this organization are done by volunteers called MNMS Members, Visionaries and Legacy Supporters. Along with being passionate about MNMS, Amit is actively involved in speech and debate, student council and high school basketball.

Wanted: community spirited folk, good in a crisis

Newark, Notts., UK: A council and a first aid charity are looking for volunteers  who could support their communities in an emergency.

In a major emergency such as a serious fire, flooding, snow and storms, our communities, especially rural communities, can find themselves in need of temporary support to help people who for one reason or another are having difficulties with continuing their normal daily lives.
It is at times like these that the emergency services and local authorities are stretched to the limit and community minded volunteers come forward to offer short term assistance.

Newark and Sherwood District Council and St John Ambulance in Nottinghamshire are hosting a presentation on February 28th in a bid to recruit potential volunteers for across the district.
The council’s emergency planning officer, Mark Henry, said without having completed a basic security check and some safety training, the authorities were unable to accept valuable offers from willing but unregistered volunteers, whatever their previous stated history or occupation.

“This is a big loss and one we very much regret at the time. So, in an effort to close the gap between the requirements of ensuring safe working and the protection of children and vulnerable people, St John Ambulance, on behalf of the Nottinghamshire Emergency Responders, is initiating a new scheme to focus on a minimum commitment volunteer who will complete only the most basic of registration and training to become a fully-approved and qualified volunteer, able to support their communities in an emergency, just as regular uniformed St John volunteers do.”

The new ‘Community Emergency Volunteer’ or CEV would need only to complete around two hours’ training every other month. As part of the process the volunteer will get a free Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check, First Aid certificate, fire safety certificate, a Working with Children and Vulnerable People certificate, as well as background knowledge about the emergency response process, an ID Card and some free personal protective clothing.

Mark Henry said the Emergency Services will be able to work with Community Emergency Volunteers as easily as they do with the regular uniformed St John Ambulance, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Cruse and other registered volunteer organisations.

He added: “This is a big step forward in national preparedness, helping to make communities ready to cope with major emergencies. It is also a great opportunity to gain a free package to aid your existing community volunteer work, whilst allowing you to become part of the wider emergency response at times when your valued support would be most needed.”

The presentation will be held in the Carriage Court at Kelham Hall, Newark on Tuesday February 28th from 6.30pm to 8pm, to provide further information and allow any interested volunteers to join the team.

Town vs. country

Can you live a sustainable lifestyle in town?

by Michael Smith (Veshengro)

You better for otherwise we are doomed for sure.

Many people think that in order to live a sustainable lifestyle, including growing your own food and such like, you have to go and live in the boonies. Well, the truth is that – one – not everyone is going to be able to do that and – two – we need to green our towns and cities for otherwise things will go belly up; period.

Far too many people believe that in order to live a sustainable life and lifestyle they have to live in the boonies or at least in the countryside, away from the big cities and towns, or at the very least at the very outskirts of the suburbs.

The Transition Town Movement has some ideas that we will need to make living in towns and cities sustainable and many things that work in the boonies can also be adapted for life in towns and even cities, including growing your own food, alone or in community.

Make do and mend works everywhere, as does upcyling and reuse, and is definitely not restricted, and never was, to life in the sticks. In towns and cities upcycling and reuse probably works better even as we can find a lot of things aside from what we end up with in general to upcycle and reuse.

Foraging too can be done in town and city and the open spaces and parklands have abundant wild food for the taking. Just do not take more than you need and leave some for other and for our non-human cousins.

One of our most important things to do is to “green” our towns and cities as far as the building are concerned. We need to make them energy efficient and we need to fit renewable power generation on each and every one of them.

During the previous Labour Regime in the UK the talk has been about the “need” for the creation of “Eco Towns”; a total futile exercise. It is not NEW eco towns that are needed but the retrofitting of our existing towns and cities and, yes, even villages, and making them all eco.

Our existing housing stock and office buildings need to be made “green” and our towns, cities and even villages, our existing ones, must become ec0-towns and villages themselves.

The Transition Town Movement has the right idea – though I am still having problems with the importance of pressing apples – but it must start with Transition Blocks and Transition Streets, with Transition Hoods.

Transitioning an entire town or city is not going to work immediately but area by area this might work, nay, will and must work.

Sustainability must become part of all of us whether were live in the sticks or in town or city. Otherwise it is not possible to do it at all and there is then no hope for us.

Studies have shown, also, that the majority of people living in towns and cities have a lower environmental footprint over many in rural areas and that, predominately, because in towns and cities stores, and work, and such like, are much easier to reach by foot, bicycle, and public transport.

The same studies have found, not surprisingly, that those in rural areas have a greater impact on the Planet than those living in towns and cities and this is due, mostly, because of the distances that they have to travel by car.

Not so long ago, as far as time goes in planetary terms, many great cities, Paris as an example. And it is one of the best ones, has more or less total food security by having urban farms and market gardens within the city walls, as well as every trade that was needed. And we must recreate that and hundred times improve on that even. It is not rocket science, for what once was can be again. It is that simple.

Today community gardens and allotments are one answer and allotments can be put anywhere, even on old so-called brownfield sites as long as the growing is done above ground using the deep soil method. Such raised beds in use for this can be created in a number of ways including by using so-called builders' bags, aka tonne bags.

Sustainable living in the suburbs, in towns and cities, is a must for we cannoty all move to the sticks.

In fact, greening the areas where most of us live, and work, e.g. the suburbs, the town and the city, is not just a must, which it is, but it is also feasible and could make far less of an impact on the Planet than many more moving into the countryside.

Urban farms also can and must be the norm again and homesteading in town and city must be the aim.

Let's do it! It can be done. It is but our lack of imagination that is holding us back.

Jennifer Aniston’s Secret of Glowing Youthful Skin

BeWellBuzz.com Examines Jennifer Aniston’s Secret of Glowing Youthful Skin - Enter Stage the New Anti-Aging Diet

BeWellBuzz.com knows what Jennifer has incorporated in her diet - Lots of anti-aging foods instead of carbs is what’s keeping her young and fit.

http://ww1.prweb.com/prfiles/2012/01/24/9132750/gI_73014_anti-aging%20foods.jpgLas Vegas, NV, February 2012 : It isn’t by any strange coincidence or super-human genes that Hollywood Actress Jennifer Aniston looks as young as she does. The 42-year old actress and former star of NBC’s highly successful “Friends” TV-sitcom has been engaging the science of anti-aging foods. A recent article at BeWellBuzz.com looks into this growing health craze which has been providing men and women worldwide reduced facial wrinkles and enhance their glowing and youthful appearance.

Although many people say that the age of 42 is the new 29, it is quite amazing how much of a youthful appearance Aniston has maintained over the past few decades. For those suggesting that plastic surgery or Bo-Toxin treatments are what keeps her skin appealing, they’d be very wrong to assume this to be the case.

According to Carrie Waitt, Jennifer Aniston’s nutritionist and founder of the meal delivery service Diet Designs, the key was a high-protein and low carbohydrate diet, enriched with plenty of vegetables and fruits and absolutely zero processed foods.

It is no secret that many celebrities and many Americans for that matter adhere to strict, anti-aging diets and exercise routines in order to maintain their youthful appearance, but what is it specifically about Aniston’s diet which keeps her looking youthful and sexy? Once again, according to Waitt, Aniston lost over five kilos of weight during her anti-aging diet, in which she started her day with a healthy breakfast consisting of a bowl of muesli with skimmed milk and blackberries, and finished with a rhubarb and guava shake.

Aniston and other age defying celebrities are working towards fighting their age by eating just the right kind of foods that are good for their glowing skin and support consistent fitness. With a definitive diet plan, each celebrity consumes their daily dose of anti-aging foods in some form or another.

According to Bewellbuzz.com, scientific research on genetic sequencing has revealed that the telomere and telomerase enzymes are the main factor in DNA deterioration and aging. It’s the telomeres, the little caps on the end of your chromosomes, that control cell division. The longer these cells can live, the better your body can fight the signs of aging. Therefore, life and youth extension is possible when eating foods that limit degeneration of telomeres in the body.

It has been discovered that anti-aging foods comprise of large amounts of vitamin E, vitamin D or omega 3 fatty acids that claim to activate the telomerase activity in the cell and help in maintaining the length of telomeres on chromosomes. Today, scientific research has confirmed that consuming anti-aging foods like green tea, kale, walnuts, etc. regularly can help maintain health and retain youthfulness. Larger portions of super-foods and vitamin rich anti-aging foods like berries, sprouts and whole cereal grains and cutting down on carbs is a great way to keep those wrinkles at bay.

As the body gets older, one of the most visible side effects is wrinkles. Bewellbuzz.com advises on eating anti-aging foods to deal with this issue from the root. The antioxidants in anti-aging foods will help the body look and feel the best. This natural route will prevent the need of plastic surgery or other dangerous methods of staying youthful. Making dietary changes and eating anti-aging foods instead of carbs is a good choice for all those looking to keep themselves young and fit.

A quarter of children in British homes FORCED to share a bedroom

Squeezed Middle Britain: A quarter of children in British homes FORCED to share a bedroom

  • 29% of parents think their home is too small for their family to live in comfortably

  • 14% of those expecting to become a parent within the next few months are still living in unsuitable homes

Oh, how absolutely horrible, and yes I am sarcastic here.

by Michael Smith (Veshengro)

Nearly a quarter (24%) of children living in British homes are forced to share a bedroom, rising again to 38% for younger families and 35% for those living in London, according to new figures from property website FindaProperty.com.

According to the findings, 29% of parents think their current home is too small to accommodate the size of their family, rising to 40% for younger families where parents are aged 18 – 34.

FindaProperty.com has released these findings to coincide with the launch of its new TV advertisements, the first of which uses a rapping dad-to-be to highlight the issue of household overcrowding for expectant parents.

The study also suggests that just under a million people in the UK are expecting to become a parent within the next few months, and roughly 14% of these are still living in homes that are too small to accommodate their new arrival.

Samantha Baden, property analyst at FindaProperty.com commented: “With the average cost of a three bedroom home in the UK now in the region of £193,000, affordability remains a key issue for families. Very few families can afford to buy or rent a property that meets their exact size and location requirements, and as a result, they are often forced to compromise on one or the other.

“These findings reinforce the importance of investing quality time in the search for a home that meets the needs of the family both now and in the future.”

It absolutely amazes me how much people are out of touch with their really needs and with those of the environment.

Does every child really have to have his or her bedroom? Or as with some people even their own little suites (with on-suite facilities, as some)? I sincerely doubt it.

Homes should be getting smaller again and bedrooms should be just that, bedrooms, used for sleeping and not for other purposes really, and that goes for children as much as adults.

While I must say that I can clutter up a big home as well as a small one I do think that, over the years (my home is from the 1960s), houses have become ever bigger and people have come to believe that every child will have to have his or her own room or, as said, even little suite of rooms.

We have gone from the ridiculous to the sublime, it would seem, though changes are afoot and I have recently come across families who have decided, though not in Britain, to downsize to rather tiny homes.

The few that do not seem to make those demands for separate rooms for each and every child seem to be those that have cut themselves off the mainstream, be that the what we used to call New Age Hippies or the “Traveler” communities.

The size of the McMansions and similar that everyone – at least those who have a little bit too much money – are aspiring to is no good for the Planet and we must reduce the footprint (as in real paw-print) of our homes again, as well.

If you have a nice piece of land and put a small enough home on it you have more land left to grow a good garden to feed your family. Much more important than a room for each of the kids.

The term “unsuitable home” is one that does really get to me. What does this mean? A home where there is not a bedroom for every child. Oh my God, how horrible. Is it not time we woke up to the fact that the Planet cannot support all those huge homes that some seem to desire.

I mean, honest, what makes a home “unsuitable”? It is not the fact that it does not have a bedroom for every child. There are other factors but that, most certainly, is not one of them.

It is time for a serious reality check...

Sainsbury’s goes the egg-stra mile for happy hens

freedom food chicken

  • First major supermarket to move to cage-free on all fresh eggs and now  cage-free on ingredients as well
  • No1 retailer for cage-free eggs, sourcing 800 million eggs a year

In a first for a major supermarket, eggs used as ingredients in all of Sainsbury's own-brand foods now come from cage-free hens. From the basics range to the premium Taste the Difference lines, all products containing eggs are now cage-free, a move affecting 1,600 products, three million hens and an amazing 800 million eggs.

The move to ban caged eggs throughout the retailer's entire product ranges is supported by the RSPCA, Compassion in World Farming, Freedom Food and the NFU.

Sainsbury's is now the number one retailer for barn, free range and organic eggs* (Nielsen Homescan Panel data - 52 weeks to 7 Jan 2012, *for total sales of individual eggs) and since 2009 has sold over 1.3 billion cage-free packaged whole eggs - from basics to free-range Woodland Eggs.

Director of Sainsbury's Brand Judith Batchelar, said: "We've now banned the use of eggs from caged hens from all of our own brand products - not only fresh eggs, but also as ingredients. This means that whether customers are buying cakes, sandwiches, ready meals, salad dressings or fresh pasta, they can rest assured they're not compromising their ethics when purchasing outside the egg aisle."

In 2009, Sainsbury's stopped selling eggs from caged hens - before any other major retailer and a year ahead of the original 2010 target. All of Sainsbury's own label barn, free range and organic eggs are sourced from UK farms, specially selected for their commitment to raising hens in a more natural environment. This announcement marks the supermarket's latest commitment to responsible egg sourcing and hits one of the targets set out in the 20 by 20 Sustainability Plan to source all eggs used as ingredients from suppliers that are committed to higher welfare standards.

Sainsbury's now has 80% of the barn egg market which means that even the basic eggs are from hens that live in a barn with space to move around and display natural behaviour.

Alice Clarke, senior scientist from the RSPCA's farm animals department said: "We are delighted by Sainsbury's move to sell only cage-free eggs on such a large-scale. We are continuing to campaign to put an end to cage-eggs as we work hard to improve the conditions in which all laying hens are reared in theUK. Hens are inquisitive animals and it is important they are kept in conditions which allow them to exhibit natural behaviours. We hope that Sainsbury's latest move pushes other retailers to enforce similar commitments and raise industry standards further."

Katy Read, Head of Food Business at Compassion in World Farming said: "We've previously recognised Sainsbury's for using only cage-free eggs with a Good Egg Award and this latest achievement demonstrates their strong commitment to improving farm animal welfare."

As well as cage-free barn eggs, Sainsbury's continues to work in partnership with the Woodland Trust to promote tree-planting and higher-welfare Woodland eggs, produced by chickens who are free to roam natural woodland. Of every dozen Sainsbury's Woodland Eggs sold, 1p is donated to the Woodland Trust and since this partnership started in 2004 Sainsbury's has raised £1.4m, helping plant 825,000 trees in local schools, on farms and in local communities.

Warick University Research into possible Woodchester wild cat finds no cat DNA on deer

The National Trust asked the University of Warwick to test a roe deer carcass found near Woodchester Park, Gloucestershire in early January after examination of the wounds led to speculation that it may have been killed by a big cat.

Comprehensive DNA tests have found fox DNA on the Woodchester carcass and what is expected to be fox DNA on the second deer carcass found a few miles away.

Dr Robin Allaby, Associate Professor at the School of Life Sciences at the University of Warwick, said: "We did not detect cat DNA on either deer carcass. Other than deer, by far the strongest genetic signal we found on the Woodchester Park carcass was from a fox. That fox DNA was found on the ribs, legs and fur plucking sites from the Woodchester deer carcass.

"On the second deer carcass we found canid DNA. A more detailed analysis is underway to pin down the canid species but our expectation is that that will also be fox DNA."

Dr Robin Allaby took 45 samples in total, from the wounds of the deer carcasses with the aim of testing specifically for DNA from the saliva of any canid (for instance dog or fox) or felid (cat) species which had killed or scavenged from the deer.

He used those samples to carry out 450 PCRs (the polymerase chain reaction is a standard scientific technique to amplify the target DNA), and almost 600 sequence reactions. The team searched for two gene targets each of deer and canid, but over 30 different cat gene targets.

David Armstrong, Head Ranger for the National Trust in Gloucestershire said: "The story of the investigation of the dead deer has really sparked off local curiosity with a lot of people who visit Woodchester Park to explore. People love a mystery like this and although we haven't found a wild cat, many of our visitors clearly believe there might be something interesting living quietly hidden in Woodchester."

Rick Minter, author of a new book on big cats reported in Britain, said: "There has been speculation of breeding amongst feral big cats in the UK. We are no closer to indicating that with these results, but lessons have been learnt from Warwick University's valuable input to this exercise. The strong media interest suggests an appetite to look into this subject further, and recent community surveys in Gloucestershire have indicated a strong desire for big cat evidence to be researched carefully.

"We should not be complacent about possible big cats in the UK, but considering these animals living secretly in our landscape can fire people's imaginations and help us consider all of the wild nature around us. Our outdoors can still hold surprises maybe."

Big cats will do their utmost to avoid contact with people but anyone who does see a big cat in the wild is advised to stay composed and back away from the animal.

Any sightings or possible evidence on National Trust land can also be reported by email to nature@nationaltrust.org.uk.

About The National Trust:

Last Chance to Take Advantage of Higher Feed-In Tariff

United Kingdom, February 17, 2012 : In recent years, solar panels have become a popular choice for homeowners. Not only because they reduce carbon footprint on the planet but also as they offer money saving opportunities. The latest news that the Feed-In Tariff will be halved in March has resulted in a ‘gold rush’ as people look to take advantage of the higher tariff. As the deadline gets closer, solar panels sites have seen a surge in sales.

It has come to light that the Feed-In Tariff will soon be cut from 43.3p per kilowatt to 21p per kilowatt. The cut will come in March but any installation which is completed before this time will benefit from the higher tariff.

Solar Panels Prices is offering customers the opportunity to compare prices from a range of installers. After filling in their details in the quote form, customers need only wait whilst the team at Solar Panels Prices scour customers’ local areas for the best deals on installation.

Each customer will receive three free, no obligation quotes on MCS registered suppliers and will be informed of the process before committing to installation. Those hoping to benefit from the higher Feed-In Tariff must act fast so that the installation can be complete before the deadline in March.

Further cuts will come in July and October so those who do miss out can still take advantage of the 21p per kilowatt tariff. For full details on installation and to save up to 75% off, visit SolarPanels-Prices.co.uk.

New York Police: Don't walk away when warming up cars

by Michael Smith (Veshengro)

This is a rather common sense statement but one that many people do not heed and thus many a car gets stolen in the cold of winter when people start up their cars to warm them up before starting out to work or whatever.

Warming up your car is a waste of time, a waste of fuel, as today's cars have no need for warming up the engine, not even diesel cars. Walking away from a car where the keys are in the ignition and the engine running is not a good move either.

However, this is what has been happening during the recent cold spells in New York and I am sure this is being repeated throughout the cold areas of the USA and Canada and elsewhere.

Remember:

  • Your car, unless one that is more that 20 years old, does not need warming up, not even on real cold mornings. Yes, the car will be cold inside but...

Starting up your car and needlessly warming it up in idle – or worse even with a cruise control on revving it higher than idle – is a serious waste of fuel and is very bad for the Planet (and your wallet).

If you insist on warming up your car do not leave it unguarded and walk away from it, not even for a few minutes.

Never, ever leave your car unattended with the key in the ignition and the engine running. Not even just leave the key in the ignition either. In Britain it is actually illegal to do so.
