Glitch reveals U.S. military's weak spot

A problem that left up to 10,000 military GPS units useless for days sparks security concerns

A problem that rendered as many as 10,000 U.S. military GPS receivers useless for days is a warning to safeguard a system that enemies would love to disrupt, a defense expert says. This glitch shows that the US military relies way too much on GPS.

But it doubtless will not just be the US military for I remember that also the British forces seem to have done away – entirely – with ordinary compasses and rely on the electronic devices altogether. Bad move, as far as I am concerned.

The Air Force has not said how many of its weapons, planes or other systems were affected or whether any were in use in Iraq or Afghanistan. But the problem, blamed on incompatible software, highlights the military's reliance on the Global Positioning System and the need to protect technology that has become essential for protecting troops, tracking vehicles and targeting weapons.

"Everything that moves uses it," said John Pike, director of Globalsecurity.org, which tracks military and homeland security news. "It is so central to the American style of war that you just couldn't leave home without it."

The problem occurred when new software was installed in ground control systems for GPS satellites on Jan. 11, the Air Force said.

Officials said between 8,000 at 10,000 receivers could have been affected, out of more than 800,000 in use across the military.

It would appear to me that our over-reliance and -dependence on electronic equipment of this nature is very bad news and that we must, seriously, reconsider our reliance on them.

I am no Luddite. I do use computers, the Internet and all that and am quite happy to do so but I can see the problems that can be caused by systems such as the military devices going down.

Reliance on such devices and systems also makes the troops vulnerable to cyber attacks by the enemy and let us not even think about the satellites failing.

Rethinking the way we use technologies might be a good idea and especially as to how we rely on them.

Canadian Forest Industry And Environmental Groups Sign World's Largest Conservation Agreement Applying To Area Twice The Size Of Germany

TORONTO/MONTREAL, CANADA: On May 18, 2010, 21 member companies of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC), and nine leading environmental organizations, unveiled an unprecedented agreement – the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement – that applies to 72 million hectares of public forests licensed to FPAC members. The Agreement, when fully implemented, will conserve significant areas of Canada’s vast Boreal Forest, protect threatened woodland caribou and provide a competitive market edge for participating companies.

Under the Agreement FPAC members, who manage two-thirds of all certified forest land in Canada, commit to the highest environmental standards of forest management within an area twice the size of Germany. Conservation groups commit to global recognition and support for FPAC member efforts. The Agreement calls for the suspension of new logging on nearly 29 million hectares of Boreal Forest to develop conservation plans for endangered caribou, while maintaining essential fiber supplies for uninterrupted mill operations. “Do Not Buy” campaigns by Canopy, ForestEthics and Greenpeace will be suspended while the Agreement is being implemented.

“The importance of this Agreement cannot be overstated,” said Avrim Lazar, President and CEO of FPAC. “FPAC member companies and their ENGO counterparts have turned the old paradigm on its head. Together we have identified a more intelligent, productive way to manage economic and environmental challenges in the Boreal that will reassure global buyers of our products’ sustainability. It’s gratifying to see nearly a decade of industry transformation and hard work greening our operations, is culminating in a process that will set a forestry standard that will be the envy of the world.”

Environmental groups, including the three organizations that have been mobilizing large customers towards green products, say the coming together of two traditional adversaries reflects a new commitment to a common goal.

“This is our best chance to save woodland caribou, permanently protect vast areas of the Boreal Forest and put in place sustainable forestry practices,” said Richard Brooks, spokesperson for participating environmental organizations and Forest Campaign Coordinator of Greenpeace Canada. “Concerns from the public and the marketplace about wilderness conservation and species loss have been critical drivers in arriving at this agreement. We have a lot of work to do together to make this agreement successful and we are committed to make it happen.”

Also vital to the agreement have been the efforts of the Pew Environment Group and Ivey Foundation, which worked to support the two sides coming together and to facilitate the negotiations.

“For years we have helped bring opposing parties together to conserve this global treasure, Canada’s boreal forest,” said Steve Kallick, director of the Pew Environment Group’s International Boreal Conservation Campaign. “We’re thrilled that this effort has led to the largest commercial forest conservation plan in history, which could not have happened without both sides looking beyond their differences. As important as the announcement is, our ultimate success will be measured by how we tackle the work ahead to put this plan into practice.”

The Agreement identifies explicit commitments for both sides and sets out a plan, which includes:

  • The development and implementation of world-leading forest management and harvesting practices;

  • The completion of joint proposals for networks of protected areas and the recovery of species at risk including woodland caribou;

  • A full life cycle approach to forest carbon management; and

  • Support for the economic future of forest communities and for the recognition of conservation achievements in the global marketplace.

Signatory environmental organizations, FPAC, and the Association’s companies have begun meetings with provincial governments, First Nations and local communities across the country to seek their leadership and full participation in advancing the goals of the Agreement. Participants recognize that governments, including First Nation governments, are decision makers within their jurisdictions. The Agreement recognizes that aboriginal peoples have constitutionally protected aboriginal and treaty rights that must be respected and engaged in order for the Agreement to fulfill its objectives.

The progress made to reach the objectives laid out in the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement will be regularly measured and reported on by a jointly agreed-upon independent auditor.

April 2010 President's Cancer Panel Warns Of Bisphenol-A Toxic Effects

CHICAGO, IL: Cancer Prevention Coalition Chairman Samuel S. Epstein, M.D. is drawing public attention to the 2010 President's Cancer Panel report which explicitly cited Bisphenol-A (BPA) as a "chemical of concern," and warned that "more than 130 studies have linked BPA to breast cancer, obesity, and other disorders."

Bisphenol-A is widely used as a plasticizer in polycarbonate baby bottles, besides adult personal care and cosmetic products, food can linings, microwave oven dishes, dental sealants, and also medical devices. Other recently recognized major sources are cash register and credit-card receipts, which are coated with microscopic powdered BPA, and which many of us handle daily.

The Panel rejected the March 2009 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety assessment of BPA as "incomplete and unreliable because it failed to consider all the relevant scientific works." The Panel also warned that FDA's "safety assessment on BPA" had been rejected by a March 2009 consortium of independent experts from academia, government, and industry. The Panel report further emphasized that "science at the FDA is deficient, and the Agency is not prepared to meet regulatory responsibilities."

The scientific evidence on the toxic effects of BPA is extensive, Dr. Epstein emphasizes. A 2007 review of about 700 studies on BPA, published in the journal Reproductive Toxicology, found that the fetus and infants are highly vulnerable to the toxic hormonal effects of this ingredient, technically known as "endocrine disruptive."

An accompanying study by National Institutes of Health researchers reported uterine damage in newborn rodents exposed to levels of BPA comparable with those of normal human exposure. This finding may also implicate BPA as a cause of reproductive tract disorders in women, after their earlier exposure as fetuses or infants.

Previous studies in the journal Endocrinology, besides elsewhere, reported that BPA masculinizes the brain of female mice and feminizes the brain of male mice. Toxic effects of this hormone disrupter in pregnant women are evidenced in their infant baby boys by the reduction in the normal distance between their anus and genitals. This decrease in anogenital distance is also associated with a decrease in sperm production. Based on such evidence, Health Canada declared BPA to be a "toxic chemical" in early 2008.

In addition to these toxic effects, exposure of pregnant rodents to BPA, at levels 2,000 times lower than the Environmental Protection Agency's "safe dose," resulted in sexual abnormalities in their offspring. These include an increased number of "terminal end buds" in breast tissue, which are associated with a subsequent high risk of breast cancer. However, an American Plastics Council spokesman claimed that the human relevance of these finding is only "hypothetical."

Dr. Epstein warns that BPA has also been found in human blood, placental and fetal tissue, and incriminated as a predisposing factor for prostate cancer. The authors of this study also linked endocrine-dependent human cancers, such as breast cancer, to the minimal levels of BPA to which pregnant women are exposed. An August 2, 2007 consensus statement by several dozen scientists warned that BPA, even at very low exposure levels, is probably responsible for many human reproductive disorders.

A September 2008 publication, Endocrine-Related Cancer, by one of us (Dr. Gail Prins) reviewed the substantial scientific evidence on the toxic hormonal effects of BPA, besides other endocrine disruptive chemicals (EDC's) in pregnant women. She concluded that infants and children are highly sensitive to their toxic effects, particularly subsequent risks of prostate cancer.

In October 2008, Science Daily reported on an article on BPA called "A Plastic World," in a then pending special section on Environmental Research. Two other articles reported that fetal exposure to BPA disrupted the normal development of the brain and behavior in rats and mice. Other articles have also reported that BPA is massively contaminating the oceans and harming aquatic wildlife.

The June 2009 Endocrine Disruption Act authorized the National Institute of Environmental Health Science "to coordinate" research on hormone disruption to prevent exposure to chemicals "that can undermine the development of children before they are born and cause lifelong impairment of their health and function." This Bill was supported by public health, consumer and children's advocacy groups, and further strengthened by California's Senator Dianne Feinstein's legislation to ban BPA from food and beverage containers. Of major relevance, this legislation has also been endorsed by the April 2010 President's Cancer Panel On "Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now," 2008-2009 Annual Report. This further warns that "to a disturbing extent, babies are born pre-polluted."

Dr. Epstein stresses that there are safe alternatives to BPA. As emphasized in the author's 2009 Toxic Beauty book, the recent development of "green chemistry" has encouraged the phase-out of product packaging that relies on petrochemical plastic containers, particularly those containing BPA. These containers are now being replaced with biodegradable substitutes, including recycled paper. Such "green" packaging reduces energy use, greenhouse gases, and non-degradable or poorly degradable wastes currently disposed of in landfills.

In January this year, the FDA announced an "Update on BPA," with particular reference to its use in food packaging, plastic baby bottles, feeding cups, and metal containers, to avoid childhood exposure. Nevertheless, FDA has still failed to take any regulatory action to this effect. Meanwhile, the industry's Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel does not even make any reference to BPA in its annual "safety assessments."

In March this year, Congressmen Bobby Rush and Henry Waxman released a draft of the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act of 2010. The key provisions of this Act include establishment of a program to review and protect children from risks of toxic exposures, including BPA. The passage of this legislation is urgently needed in order to ban BPA from baby bottles, food packaging and other consumer products, especially to prevent any further childhood exposure.

One month later, Senator Lautenberg introduced the "Safe Chemicals Act of 2010," aimed at revamping the 34 year-old Toxic Substances Control Act. This is intended to ensure that "those who make the chemicals--ought to be responsible for testing them before they are released to the public." This surely should be the case for BPA.

Protect Children's Health From Toxic BPA

CHICAGO, IL: Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition, Samuel S. Epstein, M.D. is urging public support for the recently introduced Toxic Chemicals Safety Act of 2010, which establishes a program to review and protect children from risks of toxic exposures, including Bisphenol-A (BPA), a common contaminant in consumer goods, and, not to be forgotten, in the lining of a number of water bottles as well as tin cans.

On March 30 this year, Dr. Epstein points out, the Washington Post announced that the Environmental Protection Agency listed BPA as "a chemical of concern." The Post also noted that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) previously expressed "concerns about the chemical's hormonal effect on human health." However, the American Chemistry Council claims "that BPA is not a risk to the environment at current low levels."

Why does it not surprise me in the very least that the Chemical industry lobby claims Bisphenol-A (BPA) to be, basically, harmless. Is it no the very same that they do as to so many other products.
BPA is widely used in polycarbonate bottles, such as baby products, besides adult personal care and cosmetic products, food can linings, microwave oven dishes, dental sealants, and also medical devices. As well as, as indicated before, in polycarbonate water bottles, with the exception of Nalgene and the “We Want Tap” bottles, and the liners of many aluminum water bottles, including the older versions of SIGG and Gaiam.

With all this evidence and proof of the dangers of BPA, especially to children's health, it is beyond comprehension that, unlike in some jurisdictions, BPA and products containing BPA have not as yet been bannded.

Then again, seeing the link that exists between the FDA and industry, once again this is not surprising though. The agency that is supposed to be independent is far from that. It is up to the people to demand a change.

Fiskars PowerGear Pruners – Product Review

More power with less effort


The PowerGear technology employed with those pruners optimizes cutting power, enabling the user to tackle thicker stems effortlessly, whilst reducing strain on wrists.

The rotating handle does take a little getting use to but once that has happened, about five minutes after you have started using it, you wonder how you ever have managed with any other kind of pruner.


The large bypass pruner that I got with the Press Pack at the Garden Press Event 2010, and which I had wanted to do a review on for months now, can cut, according to the information, stems up to 20mm in diameter and as that is given for green wood and I have managed to cut dead wood – though for that anvil pruners should, rightly be used – the cutting power is tremendous.

The pruners cut effortlessly through the given size and that nigh on even in dead wood and this style definitely could become the choice for the serious gardener and professional.

The PowerGear pruners are somewhat chunkier than most conventional ones and hence might not, as easily, be accommodated in belt holsters, I am afraid, but that is just a little side comment. Maybe Fiskars could design a belt holster specifically for the PowerGear range.

A very well designed Bypass Pruner that has really got some power.

A very interesting thing is the little screw at the PowerGear handle area that allows for adjusting the opening width. Something that could be handy for some size hands, pardon the pun.

The Web of Life

Everything is linked; every animal, every tree and every piece of life wherever, is linked in this Web of Life and when one part gets damaged this entire net suffers.

Our ancestors, of far gone days, knew this symbiotic relationship almost instinctively, but the more we have advanced and progressed in sophisticated religion and thought and science the further away we got from this knowledge and understanding.

We do, however, ignore this web at our peril and the current state of the world shows this very well.

Alas, too many of our contemporaries still believe that modern man has the answers to all those problems and that modern man can solve it without paying any heed to the intricacy of this web of all life.

Is not, many say, man the pinnacle of all creation?

In all honesty one can but wonder as to that and the modern acts he is no pinnacle of anything.

It is that attitude, however, that is causing us the problems and the grief of today. Because man thought himself above creation we are in the mess that we are in today as for the environment and everything else is concerned.

Humans are but a cog on the wheel and a strand in the web; they are neither the wheel nor the web but behave is if they be – the great majority that is.

The Abrahamaic religions, and their interpretations, with Christianity at the absolute forefront, have to should the main blame in this.

In the interpretations of the scriptures by especially Christianity the term of “man was given dominion over the Earth” is being misinterpreted as “domination” instead of the true word that was translated into “dominion”, for the truth is that is states that G-d made man to be the husbandman, the steward, of Creation and not to dominate and exploit it.

It, however, suited certain groups to interpret it in this way to make the exploitation of Creation and even other human beings as “legal” under biblical code. But, whatever excuse and explanation they like to use this is not what was intended, and it is time that everyone woke up to that fact.

Man is but a part of the Web of Life and certainly not its crowning glory and the sooner modern man understood that the better things would be.

The ancient ones, as I said before, instinctively understood that they were linked to everything else on the Planet and thus with the Planet Herself by an invisible web, the Web of Life.

The more man advanced, however, and whether we can actually call that advancement, the further away man got from this understanding to the very point when man made religions that would allow him to call all such notion paganism and thus banned.

The result of leaving this path that the ancient ones understood so very well has led us to the road of near destruction and we must make a full U-turn and link back up with Nature and heed Her instructions. We ignore them at our peril and at the peril of our children and children's children.

Let's all rejoin the Web. No, the Web of Life, We have already joined the World Wide one.

D. Tobias Wong 1974-2010 – Orbituary

D. Tobias Wong, “father” of the Sun Jar, dies age 35

D. Tobias Wong, the Canadian-born, New York-based artist and designer, probably best known to many of us as the “father” of the Sun Jar, passed away in the early morning of Sunday, May 30, 2010. He was 35.

Through his work, Wong helped bring forth much of what is now taken for granted in contemporary culture. Influenced by Dada and, especially, Fluxus, he questioned authorship through appropriation; held a mirror to our desires and absurdities; upended the hierarchy between design and art, and the precious and the banal; and helped redefine collaboration and curation as creative practices.

Working within what he termed a "paraconceptual" framework, Wong prompted a reevaluation of everything we thought we knew about design: its production, its psychological resonance, its aesthetic criteria, its means of distribution, its attachment to provenance, its contextualization and its manner of presentation. Wong was a keen observer, an original mind, a brilliant prankster, and an unerring friend.

Wong's work was widely exhibited, including at the Museum of Modern Art and Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. His many projects included those for Colette, Comme des Garcons, Prada/OMA, Cappellini and Swarovski Crystal Palace. In addition to the objects he created, re-created, repurposed, rarefied and otherwise manipulated, Wong's work included events and happenings that included, among many others, a pop-up tattoo parlor at Art Basel Miami Beach/Design Miami and the Wrong Store, a "store" in New York that was in fact never open. (As with much of Wong's work, both were collaborations.) Wong was named Young Designer of the Year by Wallpaper* magazine (2004) as well as the Brooklyn Museum of Art (2006). In 2008 and 2009, he served as founding co-creative director of 100% Design Shanghai, affiliated with the 100% Design fairs in London and Tokyo.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Wong studied in Toronto before moving to New York in 1997 to attend the Cooper Union, from which he graduated with a major in sculpture. He is survived by his mother, stepfather, brother, partner and BFF.

The Sun Jr, obviously, was but one of many of his designs but it will probably the one that he will be mostly remembered for amongst the green community.

Written by one of Britain’s best-known naturalists, Woodlands offers a fascinating new insight into the trees of the British landscape that have filled us with awe and inspiration throughout the centuries.

Looking at such diverse evidence as the woods used in buildings and ships, and how woodland has been portrayed in pictures and photographs, Rackham traces British woodland through the ages, from the evolution of wildwood, through man’s effect on the landscape, modern forestry and its legacy, and recent conservation efforts and their effects.

In his lively and thoroughly engaging style, Rackham explores woodlands and their history, through names, surveys, mapping and legal documents, archeology, photographs and works of art, thus offering an utterly compelling insight into British woodlands and how they have come to shape a national obsession.

Oliver Rackham has been a great champion for real woods and against the endless postwar conifer plantations – a campaign now largely won. Here he is writing not as a conservationist, but simply to share his prodigious knowledge of woods and trees with the reader.

Rackham, as far as I can ascertain, really knows his subject as regards to woodlands and woodland management and it is refreshing to see and be able to read material such as this.

When the Woodland Trust, however, waffles in their review of the book about restoration of ancient woods and creation of new woods is vital to creating a countryside which is more sympathetic to woodland wildlife, and which delivers benefits to society I would like them to actually show me the “ancient woodlands” that they are referring to.

There are no woodlands in Britain that have never been touched by the hand of man and it is the stupidity of statements such as that that currently may lose us 1,000s of coppice trees in the West Country that are about a millennium old.

Many misguided people have caused working of those woods to stop “ because of the need to restore those to ancient woodlands” not considering the fact that those woodlands had been working coppice woods for the last two thousand years or more.

We must work the woods once again and use them as a renewable resource and not as something just to sit there.

A younger growing tree is more beneficial as carbon sequester too that is an ancient one and with proper renewal such woodlands will reproduce for millenniums to come. Time everyone, and especially the self-proclaimed experts and advocates of the “ancient woodland” began to understand that.

Leaving dead wood on the forest floor is doing no one good either. The so-called habitat piles are – in reality – nothing but bad forestry practice and lead to fire ladders, harbor diseases and the decaying wood not just releases the CO2 the tree had stored during its lifetime but also the much more dangerous greenhouse gas of methane.

Much, much better to actually make the wood into something, especially by means of woodland crafts, from the bodger to other users. Even using that wood that cannot be used for crafts and industry as firewood is better than having it rot down out there in the forest.

Far too long have we allowed our woodland workers to die a slow death. It is time that we, once again, supported them and their products and also encouraged new life into the woodlands by bringing in young people to learn the crafts and skills that, in the not too distant future will once again be as needed as they were before the Second World War.

String Trimmer (Strimmer) Usage Reminder

We are now entering summer and have spring behind us already but the grass cutting in your garden will still need to carry on. Many of us have a strimmer (line trimmer), whether gasoline powered or electric, and must remember, and the manufactures do it all the time, to use such tools with caution and care. Eye protection, ear plugs, bland the rest you certainly have heard this a million times right? But what about the health and safety of your trees and shrubs?

It is important to be cautious with your plant material and not get carried away in the heat of the working day. Caution should be used when trimming around the base of plants – string trimmers can girdle young trees without you even realizing the damage because the grass and weeds returns upright after being cut and hides the damage to the bark. Use a strimmer guard or protective sleeve around the trunk to reduce this type of injury.

Scientifically speaking the cambium layer is active in the spring and early summer and impact to the bark can cause slipping and the bark can loosen or be torn off. Any such damage will allow pathogens to enter the tree and already the simple damage of the cambium layer can kill the tree, as the cambium layer is the one that carries the nutrient up the tree's trunk.

So, by all means use your string trimmer and tear up those weeds and edges – but take care with your trees.

Best would be not to use such power tools at all and cut the grass on edges and around trees and such with a scythe, a sickle or edging shears, manually.

Boulder Canyon Introduces Compostable Packaging

BOULDER, CO: In the same week that Earth Day was celebrated in April 2010, Boulder Canyon™ Natural Foods unveiled plans for a compostable package for its popular All Natural Kettle Cooked Potato Chip line. The Company believes that the 7.5-ounce bag, made from wood pulp sourced from plantations that have Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) or similar certification, is the first compostable packaging developed for the natural snack food category. The new packaging is available immediately at Colorado-area Whole Foods stores with a suggested retail price of $3.49-$3.99 per package.

The Boulder Canyon compostable packaging is made from materials that are certified to meet the “Specification for Compostable Plastics” standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials. The bags can be composted in home or industrial composters, recycled through approved organic recycling programs, or incinerated at modern incineration plants.

In contrast to the corn and starch-based compostable bag recently introduced by a leading traditional snack manufacturer, the Boulder Canyon bags are made from wood pulp to mitigate any potential negative impact on existing food supplies.

Consumers interested in the greening of their snacking won’t be forced to pay a big premium for supporting Mother Earth either; the cost per-ounce is similar to that of Boulder Canyon chips in standard five-ounce bags.

“At the core of the Boulder Canyon Natural Foods brand is a desire to eat naturally, free of additives and artificial ingredients, while also being good to the planet,” said Steve Sklar, senior vice president of marketing for Boulder Canyon. “Our new compostable packaging should make a positive impact on landfill waste, so we’re excited to see this day come.”

Boulder Canyon is a national sponsor of American Rivers, the leading river conservation organization in the United States. In addition, Boulder Canyon purchases enough Renewable Energy Credits to offset 100 percent of its operating emissions annually. This effort prevents nearly 3.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere each year.

It is about high time that some more natural packaging would be used for potato chips and other products. Compostability is always one of those things though, and this one claims to be able to be composted in the composting bin or -heap at home as well and that makes a change from the ordinary.

Many of the so-called compostable plastics and other packaging are only thus is put into industrial composting units and cannot be composted at home. Something the makers forget to tell us all conveniently.

Even with cereal cartons there is a composting issue in that the outside very often is coated with materials that do not compost well at home or take extremely long to do so.

Does the cardboard for such packaging really have to have thin laminate on it? I don't think so.

We must, for the Planet's sake, get back to simpler packaging and thins is a step into the right direction, I guess.
