London MEP marks 30th anniversary of green mortgage provider

ebs_logoLondon's Green MEP, Jean Lambert, has welcomed the 30th anniversary of the ethical savings and green mortgage provider Ecology Building Society as proof that 'green mortgages are bucking the trend'.

A building society with a difference, Ecology promotes the concept of sustainability by specialising in properties that contribute to an ethical and green future in terms of construction, land use or lifestyle.

Ecology was the first lender to offer green mortgages and has been doing so since 1981 and more information about this company can be found at: www.ecology.co.uk.

Initially conceived at a Green Party conference following the experiences of a Yorkshire solicitor who struggled to find anyone willing to give him a mortgage on a property needing extensive renovation, Ecology is now one of the fastest growing building societies in the country with over 10,000 accounts and assets exceeding £60 million.

Speaking at the Ecology 30th Anniversary Conference, Jean, a founding member of Ecology, said: “The EBS has helped support innovation in the building sector and in lifestyles: it is helping to show that sustainable is practical. I am proud of what the Society has achieved and that it remains a mutual society to this day. This is a successful institution which is not out to maximise profit but to extend possibilities.”

The EBS, I think, is proof that ethical and green lending can be made to work and can be beneficial for all concerned, including the Planet, which must be, in today's world, always factored in.
