BRITISH-BRED PATIO EDIBLES

THE 'NO GARDEN' VEGETABLES

Even those with very small gardens or no garden at all can enjoy the satisfaction of growing and eating their own delicious vegetables, herbs and fruit thanks to the new Patio Edibles range of seeds launched in the Fruit and Vegetable Catalogue 2010 from leading mail order and kitchen garden supply company D. T. Brown. All nine varieties are British-bred and were developed with gardeners in mind, allowing them to produce worthwhile crops in the smallest spaces such as hanging baskets, window boxes and patio pots. An added advantage is that all the varieties look attractive while growing.

While courgettes and pumpkins usually need plenty of garden space, Courgette Buckingham F1 and Pumpkin Windsor F1, both brand new for 2010, are remarkable for their compact habits and are well suited to large containers. Buckingham F1 yields attractive, golden skinned courgettes and Windsor F1 is perfect for producing mini-pumpkins for Halloween or turning into pumpkin pie. It looks set to be a great favorite with junior gardeners. Ten seeds of either variety are priced at £2.49.

Also brand new from D. T. Brown are Aubergine Ivory F1 (£2.49 for 10 seeds) and Basil Aristotle (£2.49 for 50 seeds). Ivory F1 has a well branched plant shape and is unusual in producing white-skinned rather than purple-skinned fruits, while Aristotle is a small leaved, Greek form of this popular herb, which can also be grown indoors on a windowsill if desired.

“Growing vegetables in containers is so convenient and useful”, says the company's Tim Jeffries. “Pots can be moved as space becomes available or to make the most of the sun, and it is handy to have them near the back door for easy pickings. I also believe veg in container are less prone to diseases and pests”. He also points out all the varieties that can be grown direct in the vegetable garden, where they will save valuable space.

Also in the range are Tomatoes Tumbling Tom Red and Tumbling Tom Yellow which yield tasty “cherry” tomatoes and have a gently trailing habit ideal for hanging baskets, Sweet Pepper Redskin F1, particularly attractive and produces plenty of tender, sweet red peppers, and Hot Pepper Cheyenne F1 with its pretty but fiery orange chillies. The range is completed by Physalis Little Lanterns, deliciously sweet cape gooseberries which are revealed as the outer “lanterns” open while the fruits ripen.

The company if offering all nine varieties as a collection for just £15.91, a saving of £5.00 n individual prices. To request a free copyof the D. T.
