MARK THOMAS TO SPEAK AT URBAN GREEN FAIR 2009

The Urban Green Fair 2009, 20th September, Brockwell Park, Lambeth.  11am – 7pm.

Celebrity political activist, writer and comedian Mark Thomas will be a special guest at the third annual Urban Green Fair – the largest independent green fair in London, taking place on 20 September in Brockwell Park, Brixton.

Mark Thomas, best known for political stunts on his show, The Mark Thomas Comedy Product on Channel 4 will be returning again following his success in the Social Justice Zone speakers’ tent in 2007.

Back for its third successive year, the Urban Green Fair is carving its way into the hearts of a more aware and hands-on crowd that reflect the modern green movement today.  Over 10,000 people are expected to attend the event – billed as ‘An independent Green Fair for London’ - , which boasts several eco-zones including climate change and energy transition; food and garden; health and healing; social justice; kids; sustainable transport and building technology.  Each zone is unique in content - providing workshops, talks, films, debate and demonstrations.  Social Justice Zone organiser Alexandra Molano commented, “this year’s event is developing at a fantastic pace, with an exciting new line-up of speakers, films, and a great new kids area”.

Powered entirely by solar and wind energy, the fair thrives on its ‘no alcohol or loud music’ policy which allows adults and children to really engage with and enjoy the activities on offer, and also creates a safe, uniquely family friendly setting.  Local content is very much in evidence too, with the return of the Brockwell Bake competition, local health practitioners and the new children’s area. In the Sustainable Transport Zone, BMX racing, free bike testing and free bike maintenance lessons will be available, whilst the market presents environmentally-focused products, practices and information from across the country, combined with some great food.

The Solar Cinema will provide a captivating space to increase awareness of climate change and energy powerdown in an accessible and entertaining format through screenings of thought-provoking films including: The Age of Stupid, End of the Line, Wake Up, Freak Out and the Power of the Community.  Close to heart of many Brixtonians will be footage from “Sam the Wheels”, a participatory arts, video and web project that explores the heritage of Brixton.

As the awareness of climate change and peak oil increases, now is the time for action and change on a personal, local and national level.  The Urban Green Fair provides positive and practical examples that will empower people to make simple changes in their ideas and actions – helping to create a greener, fairer society as we head into the next few decades and the realities of climate change and peak oil.
