Wild City Mapping MontrealThe concrete grittiness of the metropolis is not always as monolithic as it seems; there are typically pockets of green, havens of calm and urban biodiversity that thrive despite all attempts to 'develop' them into oblivion. These urban wild spaces are places to forage, marvel at urban wildlife, and are also places to gather. They are the hidden hearts of vibrant cities, they are a source of wellbeing to urban dwellers. Yet too often, these precious spaces are threatened by urban development, which shortsightedly views these spaces as abandoned, residual and of little economic value.

But worldwide, communities are banding together to save their local urban wild spaces, using a variety of tactics like outreach, events, guerilla gardening, and in the case of one Montreal collective, creating an interactive online map using open source tools, mapping the wild, uncultivated spaces of Montreal.

Wild City Mapping is an open collective that is internationally based but locally focused, with members who are from all over the world but live in Montreal. Their aim is to create a crowd-sourced map(s) that bring all these disparate wild city spaces into one map:

Our map will collapse the past, the present and future. We will commemorate the past spaces that existed, the wild spaces that are thriving today, and will leave space for you to envision where new wild green spaces could pop up. All this will be mapped through the impressions of the community that uses the green spaces.

A solar super storm is inevitable and could be devastating

x-defaultIn the August issue of Physics World, Ashley Dale from the University of Bristol warns of the “catastrophic” and “long-lasting” impacts of “solar super-storms” and the dangers we face if the threat continues to go unnoticed.

Dale, who was a member of an international task force – dubbed SolarMAX – set up to identify the risks of a solar storm and how its impact could be minimized, explains how it is only a matter of time before an exceptionally violent solar storm is propelled towards Earth. Such a storm would wreak havoc with our communication systems and power supplies, crippling vital services such as transport, sanitation and medicine.

“Without power, people would struggle to fuel their cars at petrol stations, get money from cash dispensers or pay online. Water and sewage systems would be affected too, meaning that health epidemics in urbanized areas would quickly take a grip, with diseases we thought we had left behind centuries ago soon returning,” Dale writes.

Solar storms are caused by violent eruptions on the surface of the Sun and are accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CME). CMEs are the most energetic events in our solar system and involve huge bubbles of plasma and magnetic fields being spewed from the Sun’s surface into space.

CMEs are often preceded by a solar flare – a massive release of energy from the Sun in the form of gamma rays, X-rays, protons and electrons.

A solar super-storm occurs when a CME of sufficient magnitude tears into the Earth’s surrounding magnetic field and rips it apart. Such an event would induce huge surges of electrical currents in the ground and in overhead transmission lines, causing widespread power outages and severely damaging critical electrical components.

The largest ever solar super-storm on record occurred in 1859 and is known as the Carrington Event, named after the English astronomer Richard Carrington who spotted the preceding solar flare.

This massive CME released about 1022 kJ of energy – the equivalent to 10 billion Hiroshima bombs exploding at the same time – and hurled around a trillion kilograms of charged particles towards the Earth at speeds of up to 3000 km/s. Its impact on the human population, though, was relatively benign as our electronic infrastructure at the time amounted to no more than about 200 000 km of telegraph lines.

Dale makes it clear that these types of events are not just a threat, but inevitable. Indeed, NASA scientists have predicted that the Earth is in the path of a Carrington-level event every 150 years on average – which means that we are currently five years overdue – and that the likelihood of one occurring in the next decade is as high as 12%.

The 40-strong international team of scientists from SolarMAX gathered at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France, last year to identify the best ways of limiting the potential damage of a solar super-storm.

A sub-group of scientists concluded that advanced space-weather forecasting is the best solution, which could be achieved by sending an array of 16 lunchbox-sized cube satellites into orbit around the Sun. This network could give around a week’s notice of where, when and with what magnitude solar storms will take place, providing adequate time to switch off vulnerable power lines, re-orientate satellites, ground planes and begin national recovery programs.

Dale’s own solution is to design spacecraft and satellites so that the sensitive, on-board instruments are better protected again sudden increases in radiation from solar storms. He suggests redistributing the existing internal architecture of a craft so that sensitive payloads are surrounded by non-sensitive bulk material such as polyethylene, aluminium and water.

“As a species, we have never been more vulnerable to the volatile mood of our nearest star, but it is well within our ability, skill and expertise as humans to protect ourselves,” Dale concludes.

I have written about the impact that EMP from solar storms and -flares or from whatever other source could have on our critical infrastructure which is far too reliant on fragile computer systems and despite the fact that our governments know this they have done little to nothing to harden said infrastructure.

We have been leaving ourselves – not that we, as individuals can do much about it – wide open to the problems that will be, not could be, caused by such events by our over-reliance on computers and computer control in everything.

Only recently the rail services from London Waterloo to places such as Epsom, Dorking and Guildford (South West of London) were disrupted for almost a day because of lightning strike in the vicinity of one of the switching centers for the signaling causing the lost of signaling on the lines.

This was EMP from but a single lightning strike, which was not even a direct hit. The electromagnetic pulse from a solar flare of the right magnitude or a “proper” solar storm would be a million times plus more devastating. It could affect every single aspect and it will not just make the getting of petrol from the forecourts, etc., difficult; it will make it impossible.

Furthermore many of the cars on the road today would also, more than likely, fail for work; in fact some could be stopped instantly by such an event as their fuel system and much more is also computer controlled.

The apocalyptic events that could, nay would, result from such a blow to the system described by Ashley Dale above should be us a warning that we must not just harden our critical infrastructure but, in fact, changing the way we do things and how we rely on computers (and power) for everything that we do.

Sneak preview of documentary about a man who planted a tropical forest singlehandedly

forest-manFor the past 35 years Jadav Payeng has been planting trees on Majuli Island in Northern India. The 1,360 acre Molai Forest began as a barren sandbar in the middle of a river. Payeng has turned it into a tropical wildlife refuge singlehandedly. It has become his life's work.

TreeHugger wrote about him in 2012 and a Canadian filmmaker, William Douglas McMaster read the post. The story captured his imagination and now he has made an award-winning documentary film about Payeng: Forest Man.

It has been shown at numerous film festivals and we are delighted to be able to show this sneak preview to TreeHugger readers.

6 Veggies You Never Knew You Could Pickle

Why stick with cucumbers when pickled chard stems, rhubarb, and edible weeds are calling?

pickled onionsWhen most people hear "pickle," they think "cucumber," but you can pickle just about any vegetable, including extra summer squash or zucchini (even the ones that got too big; just peel and trim out the seeds), extra green beans, asparagus, carrots, or cauliflower.

Pickled vegetables taste amazing, and they also introduce healthy probiotics into your diet, turning your healthy produce into superfoods. Eating more probiotic foods helps your digestion, and emerging research suggests these foods can fight weight gain and ward off heart disease. Probiotics live in raw, unfiltered vinegars, and although heating the vinegar to make some pickle recipes can kill off the healthy bugs, I've included a few recipes that don't require this step.

The quickest way to turn extra produce into something special is to make refrigerator pickles, which is essentially adding chopped veggies to a jar of vinegar and spices, and popping them in the fridge for a week or two (that's the best way to keep probiotics in your food, too). But with just a little extra work, you can make some extra-special treats from things you might never have considered—even the weeds growing in your front yard.

The collaborative economy is for everyone

A while ago I wrote a piece titled “Is the collaborative economy only for the privileged?” In it I posed a question: How can we create a new collaborative economy that is equally beneficial for everyone, no matter where they come from?

empowered-peopleToday this question is more timely than ever, with giants like Airbnb and Uber picking up enormous funding rounds with insane valuations while their “workers” are protesting against their conditions. Many are afraid that this new economy will turn out just like the old one, with the power in the hands of few.

However, while some of the signs are indeed worrisome, there is light at the end of the tunnel. I believe that a change for the better is on its way.

New ownership models are emerging

In May I attended the SHARE conference organized by Peers. In the event especially intrigued by the words of “Sharing economy lawyer” Janelle Orsi. She talked about a future where the big sharing economy organizations would become co-ops. Imagine Uber owned by the drivers, Airbnb owned by the hosts and TaskRabbit owned by the rabbits.

This is already happening. Startups like Loconomics and Bring It Local are organizing themselves using the model that Orsi calls a “T-Corp”. Loconomics provides an online marketplace and business-management software for entrepreneurs such as bodyworkers and psychotherapists. It’s owned by these entrepreneurs, and they will own shares, receive dividends and have a voice in running the companies. Says Orsi: ”It’s not a platform for the rich to get richer, it’s a platform for reversing that.”

Neal Gorenflo summarizes this trend well: “The future belongs to enterprises that distribute control and wealth rather than concentrating it.”

The giants are paving the way

Another great point at the SHARE event was made by Arun Sundarajan, Professor of Information at NYU and a long time observer and researcher of the sharing economy. He noted that it’s vital at this stage that the big names get lots of traction and are funded well, because they face an enormous challenge that requires lots of capital to tackle: the pushback from traditional businesses and legislators. As always when completely new conventions emerge, there are lots of resistance, and without a hefty amount of capital it could be too much for the new initiatives to take.

Whether we like it or not, the collaborative economy will need lots of lawyers and lobbyists working together with goverments and multinationals, to figure out the best ways to regulate the collaborative economy correctly. It should not be the wild west it currently is, where workers often have no access to things like insurance and minimum wage, and the consumers are not protected. But it also should not be blocked. I’m sure there’s a middle ground that can be found, but finding it will not be easy, and dedicating lots of resources to it will certainly speed up the process. The work done by the big guys will help everyone, including organizations like T-Corps, which usually don’t have similar resources in their disposal.

Technology is getting cheaper

The collaborative economy is largely powered by peer-to-peer marketplace technology. Whether it’s the makers selling their products to their peers in Etsy or Shapeways, the collaborative financers funding each other through Kickstarter or Lending Club, or the collaborative consumers distributing and sharing goods and services via Airbnb, BlaBlaCar, Lyft or RelayRides, all this activity is made possible by online marketplaces.

The problem with building peer-to-peer marketplaces has traditionally been that you need a skilled developer team to build one. There are lots of people out there who have great collaborative economy concept ideas, but so far they have been unable to execute them because they lack the skills and monetary resources. Very often they have had to resort to raising venture capital early on, which makes collaborative ownership structures more challenging.

The mission of my startup, Sharetribe, is to change that, and to bring the collaborative economy to all the people around the world. With our open source platform anyone can easily create their own peer-to-peer marketplace without knowing anything about programming.

We want to do to the collaborative economy what WordPress did for publishing. We want to democratize it: to make these new tools accessible to everyone. I think this is great news for any co-op, local community or bootstrapping startup out there. Think of all the things you could achieve if technology no longer was an issue.

Sewickley Heights nature center gets kids' eyes off their screens

dt.common.streams.StreamServerJennifer Scheib has found a haven that ensures her sons, Matt, 9, and Jake, 7, get to experience the outdoors in a safe and unique way.

She started taking them to Fern Hollow Nature Center and its Natural Outdoor Classroom “to get them off the computer.”

“It's something that's structured, but there's a lot of room for creativity,” said Scheib, of Economy. “It's a good, open space for them to run around and it's a safe place to do that.”

Fern Hollow's outdoor classroom is the first certified “Nature Play” area in Pennsylvania as listed by the Arbor Day Foundation and Dimension Research Foundation. It's the 44th such certified area in the United States. The program was inspired by the Arbor Day Foundation's “Nature Explore” program.

Constructed in the White Pine Forest section of Fern Hollow Nature Park along Glen Mitchell Road in Sewickley Heights, the outdoor classroom opened in spring 2010 but will have an open house toward the end of July to introduce new features.

A grant from Child Health Association of Sewickley last summer for about $2,900 partially funded the second phase of construction at the outdoor classroom.

This past spring, Fern Hollow received a grant from the Garden Club of Allegheny County for $8,265 to complete that phase.

The classroom is open from dawn to dusk. Wednesday Nature Play Dates are geared toward children in preschool through 8-year-olds.

Frackers learn one does not simply walk into Pittsburgh and mess with its CSAs

csaboxThe Pennsylvania Constitution stipulates that its citizens have a right to “clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic, and esthetic values of the environment.”

Allow me to propose, herewith, an amendment: “… and a toxin-free CSA box, goddamn it.” (Would Benjamin Franklin approve of that wording? Who cares, he’s dead!)

In New Sewickley Township, about 30 miles north of the city of Pittsburgh, there’s a new microcosm of the ongoing tug-of-war between the oil and gas industry and people who just happen to like clean air and water (crazy! I know). Kretschmann Farm, which has supplied certified organic produce to the greater Pittsburgh area for 36 years, is engaged in battle with Cardinal Midstream, a Texas-based corporation proposing to build a natural gas compressor station right next door.

A bit of background, for those who are new here: Most of Pennsylvania sits on the Marcellus Shale, the country’s top source of natural gas. The state has 6,391 active fracking wells, and with salivating oil and gas companies aggressively courting legislators and landowners across the state, that number is rapidly growing. But this has all happened very quickly — 10 years ago, the use of “fracking” in conversation was more likely to be understood as a hedged expletive than anything else.

In Pennsylvania, one has to move pretty quickly to keep up with the developments surrounding natural gas infrastructure. But unfortunately, research on the health and environmental effects of fracking tends to move very slowly.

In that regard, Becky Kretschmann, who owns Kretschmann Farm with her husband, Don, tells me that her opposition to the proposed compressor plant has to do more with the possibility of how it could contaminate their crops.

“We just know there’s the possibility of all sorts of toxins,” she says. “It’s very difficult to get access to the sites to do research, and there is not a lot done yet — although it’s in the process — in terms of relating health issues with fracking and these compressor plants. But the research is really in its infancy. So, lots to do before we sleep.”

It’s not like these concerns are unwarranted. A few recent and alarming news items from the Keystone State regarding its natural gas industry: Hundreds of incidences of contaminated water, health workers prohibited from discussing fracking with patients, and faulty measurement of harmful emissions.

What do forest rights have to do with climate change?

The first time I heard about Charlie Taylor was the day he died. A friend rang to say that ranchers had attacked a group of Mayangna Indians in a forest near Musawas in Nicaragua, killing one of the Indians and injuring several others. Charlie—a forty-year old father of seven who farmed locally and panned for gold in nearby rivers—was the one who died.

On April 23, 2013, Charlie was part of a group of villagers who went to investigate after hearing that ranchers were chopping down forests to clear land for pasture, in territory managed by the Mayangna. It turned out to be true: When Charlie confronted the intruders and asked what they were doing on his peoples’ land, they started shooting. Charlie was hit and died a few hours later.

Since Charlie’s death, I have thought a lot about him and talked to people who knew him. What made him risk his life to defend the forest? What could I possibly say to his destitute widow, Ricalina Devis? Why are so many indigenous and community leaders being killed protecting rainforests? And how might I explain the urgency of this situation to urban friends and colleagues, who live in heated homes with running water, whose food and drugs come from stores? What do they have in common with the many millions of people who still depend directly on nature for sustenance, fuel and medicine?

How to Build a Plastic Bottle Greenhouse

People have come a great length in the struggle for a healthier planet, in the last 20 years. Recycling is not only a trend but a necessity nowadays. And fortunately it has become a healthy habit. One way to make good use of a repurposing PET bottles project is building a cheap greenhouse. We found some nice designs from Ana White. For a conventional straight-angled structure, you will need these materials.

First thing you need to know about building a greenhouse out of PET bottles is you ought to enjoy working with plastic. The trick is you actually build each `wall` at a time, although in total it seems you’re dealing with some kind of a castle, involving almost a thousand bottles in order to raise-up a 2 by 2 by 2 meters structure. Here is a effective advice to beginning the process: measure your bottles. Doing so, the frame will be exactly of the necessary size. If there is however any miscalculations, you could easily cut some of the height of the bottles. Then it’s all about cutting and gluing the bottles between them and to the wood frame. Work on the wooden frame placed flat on the floor. Make sure you have a couple of pieces of wood positioned underneath the frame; this way, the bottles will be centered to the middle of the frame and not bulking in any other way. Pour a bit of silicon in between the bottles once the wall is done. Do the same with each `wall`. And remember to put in a flap panel for use as ventilation. Long live local bees! Research shows imported bees are less likely to thrive

BeesNew research from Denmark’s Aarhus University finds that bees with a local history are more productive than imported pollinators. The researchers also found that local bee colonies are less likely to be negatively affected by mites, infections or problems with the queen bee.

The findings suggest that local bees are better adapted to their surroundings. This may seem like no big surprise, however, the practice of importing bees for pollination and honey production is common and widespread. Colony Collapse Disorder has also led countries like the U.S. to import bees from other countries. Yet according to the researchers, there has been little study of how imported bees adapt to new surroundings until now.

The researchers studied 621 colonies of honey bees spread across 11 European counties. At each location, they compared one local genetic strain of bees with two foreign strains. The findings have been published in the Journal of Apicultural Research, a publication of the International Bee Research Association.

In light of the global decline in bee populations, better understanding these key pollinators takes on greater urgency. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, bee pollination contributes over $15 billion of increased crop value each year.
